Parks Sets New Career High in Win over Purdue Fort Wayne

Five Michigan State players score in double figures.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior forward Taiyier Parks set a new career with 18 points to lead the Michigan State women's basketball team to an 85-53 win over Purdue Fort Wayne Thursday night at the Breslin Center.
On Military Appreciation Night, the Spartans honored military personnel throughout the game.
Joining Parks in double figures was graduate guard Kamaria McDaniel who added 14 points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshman Theryn Hallock scored 13 points, while sophomore guard Matilda Ekh and senior guard Moira Joiner both added 10 points.
The Mastodons were led by 13 points from Ryin Ott.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 2-0 for the eighth-straight season. Purdue Fort Wayne evens its record out at 1-1.
The Spartans scored 10 of the first 12 points of the game thanks to a pair of 3-point plays by Parks and sophomore guard Matilda Ekh. The Mastodons used the long ball to trim the MSU lead to 16-11 with back-to-back treys. Purdue Fort Wayne stayed close for much of the first quarter before a Hallock 3-point gave the Spartans their first double-digit lead of the game 28-16 with a minute remaining in the quarter. MSU ended the period with a 30-20 advantage.
The second quarter started even with both team scoring seven points in the first five minutes of the period. MSU was a little turnover prone with three during its nearly five-minute scoring drought. The scoreless streak came to an end after a free throw from redshirt-senior guard/forward Tory Ozment. Purdue Fort Wayne went four minutes without scoring, as the second half saw both offenses slow down. The half ended with MSU on top 40-29. McDaniel and Parks led MSU with seven points.
The Spartans scored the first 11 points of the second half to open up a 51-29 advantage, leading to a Mastodon timeout. MSU maintained a 20-point lead much of the third quarter. Purdue Fort Wayne ended the quarter on a 8-0 run to cut the Spartan advantage to 63-44.
Michigan State used a 9-0 run to re-assert its dominance 74-48 with less than six minutes left in the game. MSU ended the game on a 20-5 to complete the 85-53 victory.
The Spartans continue their five-game homestand on Sunday, Nov. 13 against Purdue Fort Wayne at 3 p.m.
