EAST LANSING, Mich. – After opening its Big Ten schedule last Saturday at home against No. 7 Ohio State, the Michigan State wrestling team will hit the road for a pair of conference duals this weekend.

Opening the road trip in West Lafayette, the Spartans are set to tussle with No. 12 Purdue on Saturday at 7 p.m., before heading to Bloomington on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to face Indiana in a 3:30 p.m. battle.

Saturday night's match will be streamed on Big Ten Plus, with Cory Palm on the call. Monday's dual is being aired nationally on the Big Ten Network, with Shane Sparks and Tim Johnson covering all the action.

LAST TIME OUT
Michigan State will return home for two more Big Ten matches next weekend, hosting No. 16 Rutgers on Jan. 21 (6 p.m.) and top-ranked Penn State on Jan. 23 (1 p.m.). Both matches can be seen on Big Ten Plus.

LAST TIME OUT
- The Green and White started the conference dual slate with a 27-14 loss to the Buckeyes at Jenison Field House, as MSU came away with four winning bouts, but Ohio State built up its lead by scoring bonus points in four of its six victories.
- Redshirt senior Rayvon Foley got the first Spartan win of the match at 133, delivering a 16-0 technical fall against Will Betancourt, while redshirt sophomore Jordan Hamdan followed him at 144 pounds with a 5-2 decision over Klay Reeves.
- At 157, sophomore Chase Saldate rallied from an early deficit with takedowns in the second and third periods to score a 4-2 decision against Jashon Hubbard, and redshirt senior Cameron Caffey got the last MSU victory with a 7-2 winning decision over Rocky Jordan.
- The Spartans just missed being ranked in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week, receiving 17 votes that are the most for any team outside the Top-25.
- MSU sits at No. 23 by WrestleStat's dual rankings and No. 31 in the site's tournament rankings, while the team is No. 37 in the FloWrestling tournament rankings.
- Foley is the top-ranked Spartan, landing at No. 8 in the 133 weight class for WrestleStat and No. 9 according to The Open Mat and WIN Magazine; he also just missed the top-10 in Flo and Intermat rankings, coming in at No. 11.
- Saldate is up to No. 12 on WrestleStat, No. 18 for the Open Mat, No. 19 with Intermat and No. 24 according to FloWrestling.
- Redshirt junior Layne Malczewski ranks No. 24 on WrestleStat and No. 29 with Intermat, also picking up an honorable mention from Flo for 184-pounders.
- Caffey came in at No. 16 for WrestleStat and the Open Mat, while ranking No. 18 for Intermat and WIN in addition to being No. 23 on FloWrestling.
- 165-pound sophomore Caleb Fish holds an honorable mention from FloWrestling and sits No. 32 with WrestleStat, while redshirt sophomore Peyton Omania is the 50th-ranked wrestler in WrestleStat's 149 rankings.
- Saldate paces the Spartans with 19 overall wins and in wins-by-fall at six, while Foley is behind him at 18 victories and has a MSU-leading four technical falls.
- Malczewski is atop the team at 26 dual points, and both Caffey and Foley have a team-best 6-0 dual record this season.
- Foley enters the weekend on a 15-match winning streak that has included individual titles at the Navy Classic and the Southern Scuffle.
- Winning 11 of his last 12 bouts, Caffey has tallied four major decisions, a fall and a technical fall in that span.
- The Boilermakers are 7-2 in duals this season, but are coming off a weekend split in Big Ten action.
- Then-No. 15 Purdue pulled off a dramatic 18-15 win over No. 9 Nebraska on Jan. 7 that was highlighted by upsets at 174 and 184, before losing to No. 1 Iowa, 36-4, two days later.
- 141-pounder Parker Filius lead the 12th-ranked Boilermakers in wins at 15, also pacing the team with four major decisions.
- Matt Ramos has been a perfect 9-0 in duals this season at 133, while Filius and 2021 Big Ten 125-pound runner-up Devin Schroder are both 8-1 when wrestling in duals.
- Schroder has a team-high six technical falls, while Michael Woulfe has tallied a Purdue-best six pins as part of an 11-8 overall record at heavyweight.
- Schroder ranks No. 12 on this week's FloWrestling rankings, while Filius is No. 20, 157-pound Kendall Coleman is No. 10, Gerrit Nijenhuis sits at No. 16 for 174 pounds, 184-pound Max Lyon is No. 21, Thomas Penola is No. 13 at 197 and Woulfe is receiving honorable mention.
- The Hoosiers opened the season with two dual wins, but lost its first two Big Ten duals last weekend, falling to No. 12 Rutgers (29-7) and No. 2 Penn State (29-11).
- Brock Hudkins, ranked No. 19 last week by Intermat at 133, was the lone IU wrestler to win his bout on both nights.
- Hudkins and 184-pounder D.J. Washington lead the way with 10 overall wins, as Washington also paces the team with eight pins this season.
- Hudkins comes in at No. 18 in the FloWrestling 133 rankings, and Washington ranks 20th at 184.
- MSU has a 46-30-1 edge in the all-time series with Purdue dating back to 1924-25, but the Boilermakers have won the past eight meetings.
- In last year's match, Purdue claimed a 21-12 victory over the Spartans on Feb. 12, but MSU did have winning decisions from Foley (125), Caffey, Jake Tucker (165) and Drew Hughes (174).
- The Green and White are 50-26-3 all-time against Indiana in a series that dates back to 1945-46, with the Spartans notching wins in the last three matches.
- The Feb. 6, 2021 meeting between the two schools saw Foley, Hamdan, Omania, Saldate, Malczewski, Caffey and heavyweight Christian Rebottaro all notch victories in a 28-10 MSU win.
- Foley, Omania, Saldate and Rebottaro all had major decisions, while Malczewski got a 1:12 fall over Drayton Harris.
