
Stephenson Punches Ticket to NCAA Finals on Day One of NCAA East Prelims

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Trevor Stephenson got the MSU track & field team headed in the right direction by punching his ticket to the NCAA Finals on Wednesday. On the first day of the NCAA East Preliminary Round, the men took center stage with two Spartans in action.
Stephenson became the first Michigan State athlete to advance to the NCAA Finals in Eugene, Oregon by finishing third in the pole vault. He was one of five athletes to clear 5.35m, including Kentucky's Keaton Daniel who was seeded first in the East Region. Stephenson topped his personal-best of 5.32m set at the Big Ten Championships on his second attempt at the height.
This will be Stephenson's first appearance at the NCAA Finals after reach the East Prelims in Jacksonville in 2019.
In the first round of the 1500m, John Petruno finished fifth in heat three to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday. Petruno qualified on time 11th overall, clocking in at 3:44.09. He was just shy of his PR time of 3:43.39 at the Big Ten Championships.
On Thursday, attention will turn to the women with seven Spartans in action. Field events are set to begin at 1:30 p.m. with Rebecca Mammel (hammer throw) and Brittany Krug-Biddle (javelin). Big Ten Champion Sophia Franklin will begin her journey to nationals in the pole vault at 3:00 p.m.Â
On the track, Sarah Anderson will be compete in the first round of the 1500m at 6:30 p.m. Shakira Dancy will run in the prelims of the 200m at 8:45 p.m. The night will end with the semifinals of the 10,000m, featuring India Johnson and Lynsie Gram.
