CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Michigan State track & field saved its best for last winning three Big Ten titles on the final day of the Big Ten Track & Field Championships at Demirjian Park in Champaign, Illinois.
Sophia Franklin (pole vault), Morgan Beadlescomb (5000m) and Jenna Magness (5000m) all captured Big Ten titles on the final day of competition.
Field Events
Franklin started the day with a stellar performance in the women's pole vault. In a very tough field, the senior finished first, clearing a season-best 4.35m. Her vault was ninth-best in the country this season. Franklin started on fire clearing the first five heights without a miss. At 4.25m, she was one of only three athletes remaining and cleared on her first attempt. She secured the win as the only competitor make the 4.35m vault.
She is the first Spartan to capture a pole vault title since Lauren Chorny in 2014 and Mickie Rzepka in 2005.
"Sophia really came in with the game plan to put herself in the best position to win. She had intent and went through her process. Again, she is another gifted individual, but it takes a lot of work to win. She has come to this meet before and it maybe didn't go the way she wanted it to. But she stayed the course and has become a Big Ten Champion her last year here. It's it a great note to end on," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said.
Brittany Krug-Biddle also added three points for the Spartans finishing sixth in the women's javelin. With her first throw of the competition, she reached 47.57 to secure a spot in the finals. That throw kept her in contention as she held on to sixth place.
Track Events
Magness shattered the Big Ten meet record by over 10 seconds, taking first in the 5000m with a time of 15:38.82. The time was also a personal best for Magness who's personal best was 15:40.14 at the Big Ten Indiana Invite #3 earlier this season. The previous Big Ten meet record was held by Michigan's Erin Finn in 2014 with a time of 15:48.90. Magness is the first Spartan to earn the 5000m title since Spartan legend Leah O'Connor in 2015.
Overall the Spartans scored 19 points in the women's 5000m with Casey Mossholder taking fourth (16:20.28), and Makayla Perez earning fifth (16:22.18). Aimee Piercy rounded out the MSU 5k squad with a time of (17:20.31).
"This was Mak's (Perez) first time running at this outdoor meet, so to score your first time here is really hard to do. I am super impressed with her effort and grit throughout the weekend. Casey knew we had entered in the 5k, and I checked in with her after the steeplechase and she really wanted to do it. So the game plan was to hang back and stay patient and run well late. She executed that really, really well to end up fourth in that field is really impressive," Breznau added. "Jenna just kept her foot to the gas and eventually gapped Bethany Hasz (Minnesota), who is a phemonenal runner. Jenna running away with it and getting the meet record is just a testament to her sense of confidence and her will as well."
Morgan Beadlescomb was among the main pack of runners for most of the 5000m race, taking first with a time of 13:49.05. His signature closing speed pushed him past Wisconsin's Olin Hacker for the win. He is the first Spartan to capture the crown in the mens 5000m since Kyle Baker in 1997. This is Beadlescomb's first Big Ten Outdoor title after finishing as the runner-up in the indoor men's 5000m.
"The plan for Morgan was just do what he needed to do - stay back, run well late and stay patient and wait for the proper time get to the front. He is incredibly talented and works really hard. He knew how to apply pressure and come away with the victory. There is a lot more to go in him, and we are going to see that in the next few weeks," Breznau added.
John Petruno had a huge run to finish third in the men's 1500m, crossing the line in 3:52.61. With a collision in front of him near the finish line, Petruno kept his cool to make a late push at the very end. In the women's 1500m, Sarah Anderson ran a personal-best 4:14.90 to finish sixth in a very competitive race. She trimmed her previous PR by nearly four seconds.
In the sprints, the Spartans had three athletes score points on Sunday. Jaiden Paris was sixth in the 100m hurdles (13.60), while Antonio Postell was eighth in the men's 100m (10.63). Shakira Dancy finished eighth in the 200m hurdles with a time of 23.95.
For the meet, the Spartan women finished seventh 63 points, while the men were 12th with 31. Ohio State captured the women's title with the Iowa men winning the men's crown.
