East Lansing, Mich. – Sophomore Celina Riccardo (Downington, Pa./Downington West) scored a pair of goals and Michigan State added two more goals in the second half as the eighth-seeded Spartans beat ninth-seeded Indiana, 4-2, in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament at Dr. Christine Grant Field in Iowa City, Iowa on Tuesday afternoon.
Michigan State advances to the second round of the Big Ten Tournament and will face No. 1 seed Michigan on Wednesday, April 21 (noon). The game will air live on BTN.
The win snaps an 11-game losing streak for the Spartans, who improve to 2-13 overall. Indiana closes its season with a 1-14 record.
"I was really pleased with how we came out and attacked and more importantly, that we sustained that effort," Head Coach Helen Knull said. "Credit to Indiana, they didn't quit and continued to challenge us, but we were able to create some opportunities and take advantage of those, something that we didn't do against them last week.
"We've got a challenge tomorrow against Michigan, a very good team and our league champ, but these challenges are great opportunities for our young squad and we're eager for it."
Riccardo got things going for the Spartans late in the first quarter off a penalty corner. An initial shot in the 14th minute from sophomore Merel Hanssen (Maastricht, The Netherlands/Elzendaal College Boxmeer) was saved, but the deflection bounced to Riccardo, who scored from 10 feet out on the left side at 13:12, giving MSU a 1-0 lead.
Riccardo added a second goal in the 24th minute. After a penalty corner, a pair of shot from freshman Emma O'Neill (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) were saved, but a penalty stroke was awarded. Ricccardo scored at 23:58 to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
Indiana cut the lead in half in the 38th minute, but the Spartans wasted little time in pushing the lead back to two goals. Following a penalty corner, an initial shot from junior Isa van der Weij (Naarden, The Netherlands/Sint Vintus College) and two more from Hanssen were stopped but Hanssen picked up the loose ball in front of the cage on her third attempt and scored at the 39:35 mark to make it 3-1.
A penalty stroke from senior Meredith Ross (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) gave MSU a 4-1 lead.
The Hoosiers cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as they would get as junior goalkeeper Jade Arundell (County Kildare, Ireland/The Kings Hospital) made several key stops and finished the day with five saves.
MSU scored a season-high four goals and had a season-high 20 shots. The Spartans out-shot Indiana, 20-13, and had an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.
