EAST LANSING, Mich. - In a match that came down to the wire, Michigan State women's tennis fell to Illinois, 4-2, Sunday at the MSU Indoor Facility.
The Spartans now fall to 3-6 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten action and have lost five-straight matches. Illinois improves to 2-5 with the win.
After a tight 4-3 loss to No. 7 Northwestern on Saturday, MSU came out and again showed a lot of fight.
Much like the match against the Wildcats, the Spartan put themselves in a whole losing the double point. In the No. 1 position, Asuka Kawai and Josie Frazier defeated juniors Lauren Lemonds and Nicole Stephens, 6-2. The doubles point was clinched on court No. 3 where Ashley Yeah and Kate Duong stopped sophomore Tia Makherjee and junior Jennifer Timontin, 6-3.
In singles action, senior Mary Lewis tied the score at 1-1, by making quick work of Kawai, 6-0, 6-1. After a slow start, Lewis has now won two-straight matches. But losses at No. 5 and No. 2, singles put the Spartans in a 3-1 hole.
Stephens made it a 3-2 match with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Sasha Belaya. The match was clinched on court six when Frazier defeated Makherjee, 7-5, 6-4.
The Spartans now hit the road to take on Maryland on March 12 and Rutgers on March 14.
