EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State track & field opens up the outdoor season at the Big Ten Indiana Invitational No. 1 in Bloomington, Indiana March 26-27 at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex.
"It is not overly difficult to switch from indoor to outdoor. If anything it's exciting to be outside again as well to experience the changes in seasons. As coaches, we just have to be mindful of recovery following the indoor and cross country championships. Both teams are in a positive mental and physical state heading into the outdoor season," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said.
Action begins on Friday, with a limited amount of events. The Spartans will have four in action on Friday. Juniors Calli Ostapowicz and Sophia Franklin will compete in the women's pole vault beginning at 6:30 p.m. Following the completion of the women's pole vault, the men take center stage. Junior Trevor Stephenson and senior Walder will compete for MSU.
"My expectations are for our team is to continue to build up one another as teammates, to look for growth through learning, and to focus on what they can control. We are fortunate to compete in such a competitive conference at a time like this. I think our student-athletes along with the rest of the Big Ten will find a way to be successful," Breznau said.
On Saturday, events will begin at 11 a.m. with the women's hammer, men's javelin and the women's long jump. At 1:30 p.m., the field events will conclude with the women's discus, men's shot put and women's triple jump. All the track events will start at 11: 40 a.m. and conclude with the 4x400 relays.
With just the outdoor season remaining, Breznau has gotten both teams in the top 10. The Spartan men are currently seventh with 50.5 points, while the MSU women are ninth with 46 points. Michigan State is one of only four schools to be in the top 10 for both the men and women. BYU, Arkansas and N.C. State are also in the top 10. On the men's side, Arkansas is first with 11.5 points, while the BYU women are on top with eight points.
