EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team returns home for two duals this weekend at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The Spartans (2-4, 2-2 Big Ten) will host No. 8 Ohio State on Friday, March 12 at 3 p.m. and Penn State on Sunday, March 14 at noon. Live stats and video of both matches will be available on msupartans.com.
Michigan State's match last Sunday (March 7) at Michigan was postponed out of an abundance of caution due to COVID-19 issues, but the Spartans are ready to return to their home court this weekend for the first time since Feb. 21.
"It's a big weekend for us," said MSU men's tennis head coach Gene Orlando. "Playing No. 8 Ohio State is always a challenge and a great opportunity. We've already played them twice already, so we know what we're going against. It will be a good measuring mark for us to see how much we've improved since the last time we've played them. I feel like Ohio State did a really good job of preparing us for our Minnesota match. Penn State is another good team and will be another challenge for us on Sunday."
In its last weekend of action on Feb. 27-28, the Spartans split on the road with a victory at Purdue but a loss at Indiana.
MSU began the season with two duals at Ohio State in Columbus, falling 4-0 and 7-0 to the eighth-ranked Buckeyes. Ohio State (8-1, 5-0) features three singles players ranked in the ITA Top 25 (No. 5 Cannon Kingsley, No. 11 John McNally, No. 25 Kyle Seelig), and all three doubles teams are also ranked (No. 4 Robert Cash/McNally; No. 37 James Trotter/Justin Boulais; No. 51 Cannon Kingsley/Seelig).
Penn State enters the weekend with a 2-3 record in conference play and will play at Michigan on Saturday at noon before coming to East Lansing.
"The pause for us was a good chance to reset," said Orlando. "We had individual meetings to go over what we've been able to accomplish over the first eight weeks (of the semester), even though the first five weeks were more like a training camp. It gave us a good chance to reflect to see where we are right now, and we're in a good spot. It was also a good chance to rest the body and give us a chance to make a run over the next eight weeks. Hopefully we can continue to grow and improve."
