23rd-Ranked Spartans Split Saturday At Indiana Tri-Meet
2/6/2021 8:08:00 PM | Wrestling
MSU beats host-Hoosiers, 28-10, defeated by No. 7 Nebraska, 27-10
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Chase Saldate picked up a pair of shutout major decisions and Layne Malczewski posted a pair of quick-pin wins as No. 23 Michigan State wrestling split its action in a tri-meet at Indiana with No. 7 Nebraska Saturday afternoon at IU's Wilkinson Hall. The Spartans beat the host-Hoosiers, 28-10, before being defeated by the No. 7 Cornhuskers, 27-10, in the final match.
"It was another step forward as a program today. We just need to find consistency in our wrestling from match to match individually," MSU head coach Roger Chandler said.
Chandler was in familiar territory Saturday, as he was a three-time All-American at Indiana, and was his second time leading the Spartans into Bloomington as head coach of the Green & White, improving to 2-0 in matches at IU, 3-0 overall.
Saturday was not only MSU's third win in a row over IU, but the Spartans have won six of the last seven match-ups, as Michigan State now leads the all-time series, 50-26-3.
The Spartans won seven of the 10 bouts with the Hoosiers, including collecting bonus points in five of those seven wins, with one fall and five major decisions.
"Indiana was a good win and we came with the right intensity to wrestle through every position and put points on the board," Chandler said.
In the Nebraska dual, the Huskers won eight bouts, winning the first four to open a 13-0 advantage, before Saldate collected his second shutout major decision at 157. However, Nebraska reeled off wins in the next two bouts before Malczewski posted his pin for the only other triumph for MSU, as Nebraska sealed the dual win with victories in the last two bouts.
"I thought our guys competed hard in the Nebraska dual," Chandler said. "We just need to be a little more disciplined technically in some positions. Technical discipline was the difference between us and Nebraska; they were fundamentally more disciplined and it showed. The good thing is that all of that is correctable and our guys know it."
Freshman Saldate won both of his matches at 157 pounds by 8-0 shutout major decisions, taking down Indiana's Matt Ortiz and Nebraska's Jevon Parrish.
In the bout vs. Ortiz, Saldate scored a takedown in the first period, then opened up the second stanza with an escape and another takedown for a 5-0 lead. The Spartan added another takedown in the third and tacked on the riding time point for the 8-0 win. Saldate's scoring in the second bout was identical to his opener, posting a takedown in the first frame, then an escape out of the second-period starting position, and added takedown in the second before another takedown in the third and added a point after a stalling penalty on Parris and the riding-point advantage capped the 8-0 major decision.
Saldate improved to 4-1 on the season with a fall and two major decisions on the season ledger, winning his last three bouts all by shutouts.
"I'm very proud of Chase Saldate, who went 2-0 and didn't give up a single point today. That's now three matches in a row where he hasn't given up a point. He's wrestling in every single position and that is championship level wrestling," Chandler said.
Redshirt-junior Malczewski, ranked No. 12, opened his day by pinning Drayton Harris of Indiana in just 1:12. That's the second-fastest pin of the season for the Spartans this season behind redshirt-senior Jacob Spiess' 0:53 pin in the season-opener on Jan. 16. Malczewski rounded out the day with a fall over Nathan Haas at 1:38. With the two falls, Malczewski is now 5-0 this season, having won his last nine regular-season bouts in a row as part of 12 of his last 14 overall matches.
"Layne Malczewski showed how special of a wrestler he is today," Chandler said. "He went out and struck early with a takedown in each match and immediately started hunting for the fall. If he continues with the mindset he had today, there is no doubt he will be on the podium in St. Louis at the NCAA Championships."
While one Spartans' win streak continued with Malczewski's victory, another Spartan had his streak halted as redshirt-junior Cameron Caffey, ranked No. 8 at 197 pounds, was edged in a nail-biter with No. 2 Eric Schultz in a 6-5 decision. Caffey had won his previous 14 regular-season bouts and 16 of his last 17 matches overall, with his lone loss coming to No. 1-seed Aaron Brooks of Penn State in a close 3-2 decision in the 184-pound Big Ten Championship.
"Cam Caffey showed today that with a small adjustment that he could be wrestling that guy from Nebraska in the NCAA title bout come March. That was the highest levels of wrestling by both guys and was decided by a razor thin margin," Chandler said.
In the Spartans' win over Indiana, the Green & White also got wins from redshirt-junior No. 13 Rayvon Foley at 125 pounds, with an 11-0 major decision over Jacob Moran of IU. At 133, redshirt-freshman Jordan Hamdan earned a 13-7 decision over IU's Kyle Luigs, while at 149, fellow redshirt-freshman Peyton Omania registered a 14-4 major decision over the Hoosiers' Jonathan Moran.
Caffey collected a 4-2 decision over No. 28 Nick Willham, before redshirt-senior Christian Rebottaro rounded out the team victory for MSU with a 13-5 major decision over Rudy Streck.
The Spartans return home to host Purdue on Friday, Feb. 12, before wrapping up regular-season action with Michigan on Friday, Feb. 19.
