Spartans battle Boilermaker tough in dual
MSU was facing its second-straight ranked opponent and fourth of the season out of the six matches, now 2-4 on the year. Purdue is now 3-5 overall, and the Spartans were the Boilermakers' eighth ranked foe in as many matches this season, including facing three top 11 teams in the nation, all being Big Ten opponents.
"I will start out with the bad first, I just felt like that team was more physical than we were today and I think our guys were little, caught off guard by that but that's an easy adjustment we can make," MSU head coach Roger Chandler said afterwards, evaluating the positives and negatives from the match. "It's hard to make it in the moment and I think our guys will be able to adjust to it after this. We will adjust things in the practice room and get that corrected."
MSU got off to a 3-0 lead after redshirt-junior Rayvon Foley's 10-4 decision over No. 9 Devin Schroder in the first of three ranked vs. ranked bouts on the night.
"As far as stand out performances, obviously Rayvon Foley was one tonight, that was a big win for him," Chandler said. "That guy he faced (Schroder) was a Big Ten finalist last year, and you know, I felt that Rayvon pretty much dominated the match in all aspects and that's great. He even was able to beat the guy at his best position, which is the top position, so that was really good to see one of our leaders get back on track with a win after kind of a slow start this season."
Purdue then won the next four bouts, including two by bonus points to open a 15-3 lead. The Spartans then won the next two matches and three of the next four, including wins by redshirt-seniors of Jake Tucker at 165 and Drew Hughes at 174, respectively, to close to 15-9.
Next up in the 184-pound match-up with the second ranked vs. ranked bout of the night, and Purdue's Max Lyon, ranked No. 14, then put an end to two streaks, MSU's win streak in the dual, and redshirt-sophomore Layne Malczewski's 5-0 start to the season and his streak of winning the last nine regular-season matches in a row. Lyon collected a 6-1 decision for an 18-9 Boilermaker advantage.
Following that bout was the third and final clash of ranked wrestlers with the 197 bout, where No. 8, redshirt-junior Cameron Caffey came back from down 5-3 with just over a minute left in the third period to No. 12 Thomas Penola, for a 9-7 win. Caffey and Penola wrestled to a scoreless first period, before Caffey got on the board first with an escape, and then traded two takedowns for escapes on ensuing moves, and Penola had a 4-3 lead after two stanzas. The Boilermaker added an escape to open the third for a 5-3 lead and Caffey mounted his comeback with a quick takedown with just over a minute left, which immediately led into a four-point nearfall and suddenly Caffey had a 9-5 lead. Penola tried to comeback, getting a reversal late, but Caffey thwarted the threat and rode out the win.
"The special thing about Cam Caffey is his mindset, obviously he's a little undersized at that weight class bumping up a weight class and he's dealing with guys who are much bigger than what he's used to competing against, and it's his competitive mindset and his competitive spirit that keeps him in matches. There's no doubt he was tired at the end of that match down five to three with maybe a minute, minute-and-a-half to go, and I thought he was going to have to find a way to get two takedowns, and he was able to get a takedown and take the guy right to his back ,which just speaks volumes for him, he's always looking to score points and he's never out of any match."
Can't work that 9-to-5 without a cup of Caffey!!☕️

Just how Dolly sang it:
"Working 9-to-5, what a way to make a living!"
Cam Caffey turns a 5-3 deficit to a 9-to-5 lead faster than you can say "Friday night cup of Caffey!" ☕️#SpartanStrong #GoGreen | @camonthelam pic.twitter.com/h7yndCYW4f
Caffey's win pulled the Spartans within, 18-12.
However, Purdue heavyweight Jamarcus Grant topped MSU redshirt-senior Christian Rebottaro, 4-2, to seal the win for the visiting Boilermakers.
Foley scored a takedown early and later opened up a 9-4 lead with a pair of takedowns sandwiched around a Schroder escape, and Foley added the riding time point to call in the 10-4 walkie-talkie score.

Tucker was locked in a 1-1 battle with Gerrit Nijenhuis, trading escapes in the second and third periods, respective, before Tucker used a nifty late takedown for a 3-1 victory and rode out for the win.

Similar to Tucker, Hughes was a tightly contested bout with Emil Soehneln, with the Boilermaker holding a 4-3 lead for most of the match, but Hughes held a dominating riding time and got the point to force extra time. The Spartan wasted little time, scoring 30 seconds into overtime for the 6-4 sudden victory decision.

One of the other exciting matches of the night was at 157, where No. 7 Kendall Coleman of Purdue denied Spartan freshman Chase Saldate the upset bid with a thrilling 6-4 sudden victory decision. Saldate and Coleman grappled to a scoreless opening period. The Boilermaker scored an escape out of the second-period starting position and the score stayed at 1-0 through the second and into the third, before Saldate got an escape to start the third and a quick takedown for a 3-1 lead. However, Coleman followed with an escape and takedown of his own for a 4-3 advantage, but Saldate got a late escape to knot the score at 4-4 at the regulation horn, sending the bout to extra time, where Coleman got a takedown for the sudden victory.
"I think you could just see how special Chase Saldate is tonight," Chandler said. "That guy (Coleman) is one of the best guys in the country. With Chase being a true freshman going into a match like that, not many people take Coleman down off of their own shots and Chase Saldate was able to get a double leg in, and I think it's just match maturity, that's I think just his fifth or sixth match in college, and the adjustments and the maturity is happening pretty quickly and there's no doubt he's going to be in the midst come Big Ten Championships."
The Spartans up regular-season action, hosting in-state rival and No. Michigan on Friday, Feb. 19. Action gets underway at 5 p.m. and will be nationally televised on Big Ten Network.
