Spartans Fall to Northwestern, 3-1
2/27/2021 7:50:00 PM | Field Hockey
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State took a 1-0 lead after the first quarter, but could not hang on as Northwestern scored twice in the second half en route to a 3-1 win over the Spartans at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex on Saturday afternoon.
Michigan State falls to 0-2 on the season while Northwestern improves to 1-0.
"We made some adjustments from yesterday to today in our attacking build-up," Head Coach Helen Knull said. "We need to continue to improve in the attacking 25 and produce more quality opportunities to score goals. I'm proud of the fight we had for back-to-back games and we will look to keep making adjustments and improving for our first home game next weekend."
The Spartans jumped on top in the first quarter, when junior Isa van der Weij (Naarden, The Netherlands/Sint Vintus College) tipped a shot in past the Northwestern goalie off a ball centered by senior Lia Sinisi (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex), giving MSU the lead just 3:33 into the period.
Northwestern scored the equalizer at the 21:47 mark of the second quarter on a one-timer from the top of the arc by Peyton Halsey.
Junior Jade Arundell (County Kildare, Ireland/The Kings Hospital) was outstanding in goal for Michigan State, making 11 saves.
Northwestern out-shot Michigan State, 14-4, and had a 7-1 edge in penalty corners.
The Spartans return home and play their first game of the season at Ralph Young Field on Sunday, March 7, hosting Indiana (3 p.m.).
