PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Scarlet Knights sophomore Bridy Molyneaux recorded her first career hat trick, as the Michigan State field hockey team was handed a 3-0 loss by No. 3 Rutgers in the Spartans' season finale Friday afternoon at the Bauer Field Hockey Complex.
Â
MSU ends the 2021 campaign at 7-8 overall and 0-8 in conference play, while Rutgers improved to 14-3 and 6-2 in the league action as the Scarlet Knights get set to host the Big Ten Tournament next week.
Â
Rutgers got on the board early, as Iris Langejans sent a crossing pass in front that was redirected by Guillermina Causarano, and the ball found Molyneaux on the opposite post who finished off the sequence with her first goal of the game in the 10th minute.
Â
The Spartan defense kept the hosts off the board for the rest of the first half, but Molyneaux beat senior goalkeeper Monique Jardell again in the 37th minute after a pass from Katie Larmour, as she lifted a shot from the top of the circle over Jardell's head and under the crossbar at the 36:44 mark.
Â
Molyneaux completed the hat trick less than a minute later, as she tapped home a bouncing rebound off Jardell, adding to the Rutgers lead at the 37:30 mark.
Â
MSU was able to generate some chances late, including an odd-man rush that ended with a wide shot from senior Meredith Ross, but RU held on for the shutout.
Â
Gianna Glatz played the first 51:02 for the Scarlet Knights, making one save for the win, while Sophia Howard made four saves in 8:58 of relief. Jardell finished with seven saves on the other end for the Spartans.
Â
The game marked the final collegiate contest for five Michigan State seniors, as Ross ended her career alongside Maddie Babineau, Cara Bonshak, Lori Mack and Lia Sinisi.
