
Spartan Gymnastics Reaches Season-Best Road Score at B1G Five Meet

MSU posted a season-best road score of 195.975 at the B1G Five - Elevate the Stage Meet.
TOLEDO, Ohio – Michigan State earned a team score of 195.975 on Saturday night at the Big Five Meet hosted by Elevate the Stage at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio. With its fourth-place finish in Saturday's session, MSU is currently ranked sixth in the Big Ten following the conclusion of the two-part Big Five Meet.

"We're still trying to hit on all cylinders and the fact that we got the score we got tonight was great for a road score," MSU head coach Mike Rowe said. "It's really a confidence builder for these gymnasts that they can continue to get better with four weeks to go to improve. We just want to keep getting a little better every day and stay healthy. They are still reaching career-highs and event highs and that's all we can do; that's all we ask of them."

MSU tallied a cumulative score of 195.975 to take fourth place among four-ranked Big Ten opponents. The Spartans posted a season-best 49.075 on vault, 48.925 on bars, 48.875 on beam and a 49.100 on floor to reach the Spartans season-best road score of the season of 195.975

No. 9 Michigan won the Big Ten regular season title, placing first with a final score of 197.950. No. 7 Minnesota took second with a score of 196.650. Penn State placed third, posting a 196.125. No. 24 Maryland rounded out the scoring with a 195.325. Friday's competition concluded with Nebraska (196.750) finishing in first place, followed by Illinois (196.550), Ohio State (196.475) Iowa (195.725) and Rutgers (193.625).

Spartan junior Lea Mitchell placed fourth in the all-around competition, tallying a career-high 39.375. Mitchell's all-around score was composed by two scores of 9.900. Freshman Nyah Smith placed seventh with a cumulative score of 39.100. Michigan's Natalie Wojcik won the all-around with a score of 39.775.

"The culture on this team is we know we've got it in us to do better; we've got each other's backs if we make a mistake and we can step up to the next level," Rowe said. "We know we're more than this and even more than where we are at right now. We're very excited at the fact that they believe in themselves and they believe in each other; they believe in the process that we've put in front of them and their training."

The Spartans began the meet on bars, posting a team score of 48.925. Freshman Jori Jackard was the top Spartan on the uneven bars, earning a score of 9.875 for her sixth-consecutive score of 9.800 or higher. Jackard tied for fifth overall with the score. Mitchell tied for ninth overall, posting a 9.850. Sophomore Alaina Raybon tallied a 9.775, while Smith earned a 9.750. Wojcik took first on the event with a 9.950.

MSU took to the beam for the second rotation, earning a score of 48.875. Senior Gabriella Douglas earned a 9.900 to tie for fourth overall with Michigan's Lexi Funk. This was Douglas' third beam score of 9.900 or higher this season. Smith took seventh with a career-high 9.850. Sophomore Alyssa Wiedeman posted a 9.750 and Mitchell added a 9.725. Wojcik and Minnesota's Lexy Ramler tied for top honors on beam with 9.975s.

In the third rotation, the Spartans earned a score of 49.100 on floor exercise. Sophomore Ashley Hofelich and Mitchell earned matching 9.900s on floor to tie for fourth overall. This was Mitchell's fourth score of 9.900 or higher this season and the third for Hofelich. Freshman Chloe Bellmore and junior Tristan Brown posted 9.825s. Sierra Brooks of Michigan placed first on floor with a 9.950.
