AMES, Iowa – No. 25 Michigan State gymnastics was stopped by No. 17 Iowa State, 196.225-194.175, on the road in a top-25 match up in Ames, Iowa on Friday night.

No. 17 Iowa State won the non-conference dual meet with a final score of 196.225. The Cyclones tallied a 48.725 on vault, 49.250 on bars, 48.825 on beam and a 49.425 on floor for the final score of 196.225. No. 25 MSU took second, posting a 48.850 on vault, 47.900 on bars, 48.375 on beam and a 49.050 on floor exercise for the final score of 194.175.

Junior Lea Mitchell earned her sixth all-around title of the season, tallying a cumulative score of 39.225. Freshman Nyah Smith placed second in the all-around competition with a score of 39.075.

Starting the meet on bars for the first rotation, MSU posted a team score of 47.900. Mitchell placed third overall with a 9.850. Junior Tristan Brown tied for seventh with Iowa State's Madelyn Langkamp with matching 9.800's. Smith tallied a 9.750 to place ninth. Iowa State's Casandra Diaz and Natalia Ros Vaquer tied for top honors on bars with scores of 9.875.

On vault for the second rotation, the Spartans had a score of 48.850. Senior Gabriella Douglas and Smith tied for second with scores of 9.825. Mitchell placed seventh with a 9.750, while sophomore Ashley Hofelich tallied a 9.725.

MSU posted a team score of 49.050 on floor exercise in the third rotation. This was the seventh time this season that the Spartans eclipsed the 49.000 mark on floor exercise. Smith was the top Spartan on floor, tying for fourth with Iowa State's Madelyn Langkamp and Sydney Converse with scores of 9.850, to tie her career-high mark. Freshman Chloe Bellmore tied for seventh with a 9.825, matching her career-high. Brown and Hofelich earned identical 9.800's to tie for ninth place. Iowa State's Andrea Maldonado took top honors with a 9.950.

The Spartans closed the meet on beam and tallied a score of 48.375. Douglas earned top honors on beam with a 9.875. This was Douglas' fourth beam title of the season and her eighth mark of 9.800 or higher this season. Mitchell also made the podium, placing second with a score of 9.850.

Michigan State gymnastics returns home next weekend, hosting Eastern Michigan in a non-conference dual meet for Senior Day on Saturday, March 7. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Jenison Field House. After the conclusion of the meet, the Spartans will honor senior Gabriella Douglas with Senior Day celebrations.
