EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics head coach Mike Rowe announced the hiring of Alex Wright as an assistant coach Wednesday.Â
Wright arrives in East Lansing with over 15 years of coaching experience in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and most recently spent the past year coaching at World Olympic Gymnastics Academy (WOGA) Gymnastics. Â
"I'm excited to welcome Alex to our staff," said Rowe. "He is an outstanding technician with tremendous attention to detail that is evident from the very first drill. His experience in the USAG system, coaching athletes from DP through Level 10 and elite, has given him a strong foundation for developing high-level gymnasts.Â
In addition, his background in strength and conditioning emphasizes not only performance development, but also injury prevention and increased mobility for athletes. I believe Alex's versatility across all four events will enhance our daily training environment and overall productivity. His enthusiasm, work ethic and commitment to continually raising the bar for each student-athlete will be a tremendous asset to our program, one that everyone will benefit from."Â
At WOGA, Wright led training cycles and provided technical development for HOPES, junior elite and elite pathway gymnasts, as well as athletes in levels 8, 9 and 10, while also supporting NCAA recruitment. Prior to WOGA, Wright coached levels 3, 4, 5 and XCEL athletes and assisted in coaching levels 8, 9, and 10 and elite pathway athletes at Texas Dreams Gymnastics for seven years.Â
He also spent time at ASI Gymnastics as the men's program coordinator and was a middle and high school boys and girls gymnastics coach in the Birdville Independent School District in North Richland Hills, Texas. Â
Wright is a former National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer and specialized in strength and conditioning as well as injury prevention and mobility training while coaching on the club scene. Â
"I'm incredibly excited for the opportunity to join the Spartan family and work alongside the athletes and staff at Michigan State," said Wright. "MSU has such a strong tradition and culture and I'm grateful for the chance to contribute to the continued growth and success of the program. I'm looking forward to building relationships with the team and helping our student-athletes reach their goals both in and out of the gym.Â
I also want to thank the coaches, mentors, teammates and athletes who have helped shape me throughout my career. I've been fortunate to learn from so many incredible people along the way and I'm grateful for all of the experiences and relationships that have prepared me for this opportunity."Â
In addition to his coaching resume, Wright has served as an Army Reservist since 2020.Â
Wright graduated from Texas A&M-Commerce in December 2025 with a Bachelor of Applied Arts & Sciences in Organizational Leadership. Â
