Belles and Joiner Score Career Highs in Loss to Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Sophomore forward Kayla Belles scored a career-high 19 points, but the Michigan State women's basketball team fell to Penn State 86-73 in University Park, Pennsylvania on Thursday night.
Michigan State falls to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten play, while Penn State improves to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in league contests.
The Spartans had four players in double figures led by Belles' 19. The sophomore was 8-of-11 from the field and added a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman guard Moira Joiner added another career high with 15 points, while senior guard Taryn McCutcheon scored 14 points. Sophomore guard Nia Clouden added 11 points and a team-high seven assists.
Penn State was led by a double-double from Kamaria McDaniel who scored 24 points and added 11 rebounds.
Both teams came out to a fast start on the offensive end. Penn State used a 7-0 run at the end of the first quarter to take a 24-17 lead. An Alyza Winston layup with five seconds left in the quarter trimmed the Lady Lion lead to 24-19 at the end of 10 minutes.
A 9-0 run in the second quarter gave Penn State a double-digit lead 35-25 with under six minutes left in the quarter. Clouden and Joiner kept MSU in the game in the second quarter scoring 11 of MSU's 17 points in the period. The Lady Lions continued their sharp shooting, 51 percent at the half and 49.2 percent for the game.
The Spartans scored the first nine points of the second half to cut the Penn State lead to 47-45. After a McCutcheon trey, MSU trailed by only one possession, 54-53, with 2:25 left in the quarter. Before the period came to a close, McDaniel drained a pair of free throws to put the Lady Lions back up by four. Michigan State out-scored Penn State 21-14 in the third quarter.
Penn State re-took a double-digit lead after a Hagan bucket, 74-63 with 5:10 left in the game. A 14-2 Lady Lion run put the game out of reach for Michigan State. Penn State took its biggest lead of the game, 83-65 with 2:45 left after a jumper by Syieh Frazier.
Michigan State returns to the Breslin Center to take on Wisconsin on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 3 p.m. The Spartans will celebrate Girl Scout Day and Alumni Day.

• Thursday's starting lineup of senior guard Taryn McCutcheon, sophomore guard Nia Clouden, freshman guard Moria Joiner, senior forward Nia Hollie and freshman forward Taiyier Parks, was Michigan State's was eighth different starting lineup of the season. Clouden and McCutcheon are the only two Spartans to have started all 15 games, while Hollie made her third-straight start.
• Sophomore forward Kayla Belles and freshman guard Moira Joiner both had career highs against Penn State. Belles scored 19 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Her previous career high was 12 points, most recently against Morehead State on Dec. 15. Joiner scored 15 points against the Lady Lions, reaching double figures for the second time in three games. Her previous high was 13 against Nebraska on Dec. 31. She also added two steals, two assists and two rebounds.
• Sophomore guard Tory Ozment set a new career high with six rebounds. Her previous career high was five, which she has done twice, most recently against Kansas State on Nov. 30.
• After reaching the 1,000 career points mark last game vs. Indiana on Dec. 28, McCutcheon's 14 points against Penn State give her 1,061 career points ... McCutcheon remains No. 26 on MSU's career scoring list, passing Brenda Jezowski (1980-85). She is now just 14 points away from tying Jamie Wesley for 25th on the all-time scoring list with 1,075 points. She also added three assists Thursday, giving her 515 for her career.
• With 10 steals against Penn State on Jan. 9, the Spartans reached double figures in takeaways for the 11th time in 15 games. This was the first double-digit steal game since Indiana on Dec. 28 when MSU also had 10. Six different Spartans had a steal in the game, led by Nia Clouden's four. This is the most double-figure steal games that MSU has had since Coach Merchant's arrival during the 2007-08 season was 17 during the 2010-11 season. During the 2005-06 season, MSU had 20 double-digit steal games. As a team, Michigan State is averaging 11.6 spg, which is second in the Big Ten.
