Women’s Tennis Falls to Furman, 4-3, at ITA Kick-Off Weekend

ATHENS, Ga. – Michigan State women's tennis fell in a hard-fought battle with Furman on Sunday afternoon to close out ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Furman started off the match by winning the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. The No. 30-ranked doubles pair of Julia Adams and Katarina Kozarov defeated sophomore duo Maja Pietrowicz and Lauren Lemonds, 6-3, on court one. The duo of sophomore Jennifer Timotin and junior Mary Lewis won a 6-2 decision over Furman's Danni Vines and Madison Dillon at No. 2 doubles.
Furman secured the doubles point as sophomore Nicole Stephens and senior Samantha Memije fell to MaryAnn Rompf and Georgie Walker, 6-4.
In singles action, MSU looked to rebound after Furman took the early 1-0 lead. The Spartans secured the first three singles wins to take a 3-1 lead.
Memije defeated Furman's Adams in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 singles to tie the match at 1-1. Lemonds followed with a straight-set victory over Rompt, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, on court three. Stephens battled with Walker after dropping the first set and was victorious with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead.
Furman mounted a comeback as they won the next three singles matches to clinch the match at 4-3. No. 110 Lewis battled to three sets with No. 13 Kozarov, before falling 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, on court one. Pietrowicz dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to Madison Dillon at No. 5 singles. The match was clinched at No. 6 singles as freshman Dagmar Zdrubecka fell to Furman's Maggie Pate, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

The Spartans take to the road again next weekend as they travel to Marquette on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. and DePaul the following day at 4 p.m.
