Women’s Tennis Defeats Marquette, 4-3, On the Road

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Michigan State women's tennis defeated Marquette, 4-3, on the road on Saturday evening, improving to 2-2 on the season.
MSU started off the match by clinching the doubles point, with wins on courts one and two. On court two, senior Samantha Memije and Nicole Stephens defeated Elisabeth Desmarais and Giulia Turconi, 6-3. Marquette evened the race for the doubles point, as Dagmar Zdrubecka and Mary Lewis fell to Lesley Foe and Milica Novakovic, 6-4.
The sophomore duo of Lauren Lemonds and Maja Pietrowicz rallied to a 7-6 victory over Marquette's Fleur Eggink and Natalija Popovic at No. 1 doubles, to clinch the doubles point for MSU.
MSU took a 1-0 lead heading into singles play and looked to continue their momentum. At No. 5 singles, Pietrowicz defeated Franks in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. Stephens battled to three sets with Turconi and won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Memije downed Novakovic, 6-2, 6-7, 6-0 at the No. 2 position for Michigan State.
Desmarais defeated Zdrubecka, 6-4, 6-4 on court six. Lemonds and Lewis battled to three-sets with their opponents, but fell in the third set. Lewis dropped a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles to Eggink, while Lemonds fell to Popovic, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 on court three.
The Spartans continue their three-match road stretch at DePaul on Sunday, Feb. 2, with the match set to begin at 5 p.m. ET.
