
Spartan Gymnastics Hosts No. 16 Nebraska on Sunday

MSU will take on No. 16 Nebraska on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Jenison Field House.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics hosts No. 16 Nebraska at Jenison Field House on Sunday, Jan. 26, with the meet slated to begin at 2 p.m.
Saturday's meet will be streamed live on BTN+ and live results will be posted on MSUSpartans.com.
LEAVING IT ALL ON THE FLOOR ...
Michigan State rallied to a comeback win over Ohio State in the Big Ten opener, after being down a full point entering the final rotation.
MSU was trailing OSU 146.750-145.975 with one rotation to go, before earning a 195.450-195.325 win.
The floor squad  - Lea Mitchell, Ashley Hofelich, Chloe Bellmore, Tristan Brown and Nyah Smith  - all scored 9.725's or higher. Mitchell, Hofelich and Bellmore all set or tied their career-highs on floor to clinch the victory for the Spartans.

In a tightly-contested meet that came down to the final routine, junior Lea Mitchell tied a career-high on floor to guide Michigan State gymnastics past Ohio State in its Big Ten opener on Jan. 18 at Jenison Field House. The Spartans edged the Buckeyes 195.450-195.325.
Mitchell garnered all-around honors for the second-straight meet, edging Ohio State's Olivia Aepli with a score of 39.325. The junior also captured the event title on floor, tying her career high with a 9.925. Senior Ella Douglas continued her domination on beam with her third-straight beam win. She tied for first with OSU's Morgan Lowe with a 9.825.
The Spartans started the night on vault and captured a team score of 48.475. Ohio State's Aepli won the event with a 9.975. Mitchell and freshman Nyah Smith tied for fourth with scores of 9.775.Â
Michigan State earned its first score over 49.000 on bars this season, recording a 49.025. There was a three-way tie with Mitchell, and OSU's Aepli and Colby Miller all earning matching 9.875 scores. Freshman Jori Jackard has topped her season best every week, recording a 9.850 this week to finish tied for fourth. Junior Madison McHale also had a personal best with a 9.800.
MSU earned a 48.775 on its third rotation beam. Douglas continued her strong showing on beam tying for first with a 9.825. Sophomore Alaina Raybon tied for third with the Buckeyes' Alexis Hankins and Ella Hodges earning scores of 9.800, while Mitchell stayed in the hunt for the all-around title with a 9.750.
It all came down to the final rotation with the Spartans on floor and the Buckeyes on beam. Michigan State was able to prevail due to three career bests on floor. Mitchell previously earned a 9.925 at Illinois last season. Sophomore Ashley Hofelich also posted a career-best with a 9.900 to finish tied for second. Freshman Chloe Bellmore was the third Spartan with a career high with a 9.825 to finish tied for fourth.
SPARTANS REIGN ON BEAMÂ . . .Â
Michigan State ranks 11th in the nation and second in the Big Ten on beam, averaging a score of 48.992 over the first three meets.
Gabriella Douglas currently sits tied for 14th in the country and fifth in the conference among all beam specialists, averaging a 9.900. Douglas has won or earned a share of the beam title in every meet so far this season.
Douglas posted a then career-best 9.925 against Western Michigan on Jan. 5, before scoring a career-best 9.950 in the home-opener vs. Central Michigan and Illinois State on Jan. 11. She became the first Spartan to capture a 9.950 on beam since Kelsey Morley, who did it twice in 2009.
ROOKIES IN THE LINEUPÂ . . .
Three freshmen have become fixtures in the Spartan rotation this season, including Chloe Bellmore (DeWitt, Mich.) on vault, beam and floor, Jori Jackard (Haslett, Mich.) on bars and Nyah Smith (West Bloomfield, Mich.) in the all-around competition.

Senior Gabriella Douglas and junior Lea Mitchell will serve as the co-captains for the 2020 season.
Douglas and Mitchell are serving as co-captains for the second-straight season. The duo were both named to the All-Big Ten Second Team and gathered Big Ten All-Championships Team accolades in 2019. Also, the co-captains both competed at the NCAA Regionals in Baton Rouge, Louisiana last season.
"Ella and Lea have once again been designated as the Spartan Gymnastics Team Captains for the 2019-20 season by their teammates and coaches," Rowe said. "When it comes to leadership in the classroom and out, and especially in the arena, they complement each other by setting the standards that exemplify the values, philosophies and long-range goals of our program."
CORNHUSKER NOTES Â . . .Â
The Cornhuskers head to East Lansing with a 1-0 record in the Big Ten after defeating Penn State, 195.150-194.000 in Lincoln.
Nebraska won at least a share of four event titles against the Nittany Lions, including the all-around which was won by sophomore Adnerys De Jesus with a 39.075.Â
Nebraska ranks first in the Big Ten on floor and sixth in the nation, averaging a 49.283 through the first three meets.
Head coach Heather Brink is in her second season at the helm of the Cornhusker gymnastics program, after serving as the associate head coach for three seasons.
LAST MEET WITH THE CORNHUSKERSÂ . . .Â
This will be the first dual meeting between the two programs since the 2013 season, when the Cornhuskers defeated the Spartans, 196.700-192.100, in Lincoln on Jan. 19.
