Spartan Wrestling Set to Host No. 5 Minnesota, Maryland at Jenison Field House

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling returns to action this weekend at home with a pair of Big Ten duals inside Jenison Field House. The Spartans (4-4, 0-2 B1G) square off against No. 5 Minnesota on Friday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. and follow with a matchup against Maryland on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m. Friday's dual will stream live on BTN+, and Sunday's dual will be nationally televised on the Big Ten Network.Â
About the Spartans
Michigan State is off to a 4-4 start in dual action, with wins over No. 20 Oklahoma, Kent State, Duke and Wyoming. The Spartans are led by redshirt junior Jake Tucker at 157 pounds, who leads the team with 18 wins. A native of Lowell, Indiana, Tucker leads the Spartans with six wins in the dual slate. Tucker claimed a first-place finish at the Navy Classic, tallying a 5-0 record and capping the title with an 8-3 win over Ohio's Zac Carson in the final.Â
Redshirt sophomore Cameron Caffey, who has three top-5 finishes in tournament action, including a second-place finish at the Cougar Clash, holds a 15-6 record and leads the team with seven falls at 184 pounds. Caffey is 6-2 in duals with his losses coming to No. 16Â Zach Carlson of South Dakota State and Billy Janzer of Rutgers. Redshirt junior Christian Rebottaro is 5-3 in duals and holds a 12-8 record overall at 285 pounds for the Spartans.
Redshirt freshman Layne Malczewski is second on the team with 16 wins, including a 2-0 mark in B1G action. Malczweski ranks No. 24 by TrackWrestling and TheOpenMat at 174 pounds and has third-place finishes at the Navy Classic and Cougar Clash. Malczewski is coming off an 11-10 decision over No. 19 Joe Grello of Rutgers on Jan. 12. Redshirt junior Drew Hughes, a two-time NCAA Qualifier, holds a 11-5 record on the season with six dual wins and ranks No. 26 by TheOpenMat. Hughes won by decision over Tyler Meisiner of Michigan, 6-0, on Jan. 10, and finished with 5:44 of riding time.

The Spartans take on Maryland on Sunday for just the sixth time, with the Spartans holding a 4-1 record in the all-time series. MSU recorded a dominant 28-12 win over the Terrapins in their last meeting on Jan. 27, 2019 at Maryland. Six Spartans claimed wins in the bout, including a fall by redshirt junior Drew Hughes and a tech fall by redshirt sophomore Cameron Caffey. Maryland enters the weekend with a 2-7 record and wins over Southern Virginia and Fresno State. The Terrapins are led by All-American and four-time NCAA Qualifier Alex Clemsen in his first year at the helm. Philip Spadafora (12-7, 2-5 duals) ranks No. 23 by FloWrestling at 174 pounds and Jaron Smith (7-5, 4-3) ranks No. 29 by TrackWrestling at 197 pounds.
