Michigan State travels to Iowa City for three-day competition.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State track & field opens postseason action at the 2019 Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, Iowa at the Francis X. Cretzmeyer track on Friday-Sunday, May 10-12. For more information about the Big Ten Track & Field Championships, click here.
Â
"The Big Ten has become as good a track & field conference as there is in the country," Director of track & field Walt Drenth said. "We've got a number of teams that are ranked in the top 25. The thing that makes this conference unique is the depth at every event. You're not just looking at quality in the top four or five positions, but all the way to eighth and even non-scoring places. You can look at events from the men's discus to the women's 10,000 and say that's a national class field.
Â
After splitting the team last week competing at the Jesse Owens Classic and the Hillsdale Relays, Michigan State reconvenes in Iowa City for the Big Ten Championships before heading to the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Florida which takes place May 23-25.
Â
Events on Friday, May 10 begin at 12:00 p.m. Central time with the men's hammer throw (trials and finals) and decathlon 100-meters. Day one of the Big Ten Championships will wrap following the women's 10,000 meters which begins at 8:15 p.m. Finals taking place on day one include the men's and women's hammer, the men's pole vault, and the men's and women's javelin.
Â
The decathlon 110-meter hurdles will open day two of the championships at 9:30 a.m. with the final event of the day, the women's 3,000- meter steeplechase, slated for 6:45 p.m. start. Field event finals on day two include the men's and women's long jump, the men's and women's shot put, the men's high jump, and the women's pole vault.
Â
Competition concludes on Sunday, starting with the trials and finals for the men's triple jump and women's discus at 11:00 a.m. The final event of the weekend, the women's 4x400-meter relay is tentatively scheduled for 3:45 p.m. Along with all finals for the track events, field final on Sunday include the men's and women's triple jump, men's and women's discus, and the women's high jump.
Â
"I think all of the events this weekend are going to be extraordinarily deep," said Drenth. "The men's 1,500 meter is outstanding, the women's 1,500, the men's discus. Jerimiah Evans is ranked third in the conference and fifth nationally and that's indicative of what we're looking at when we go into every event. You're going to see kids not score that will meet a standard that will get them to the first round of nationals."
Â
FloSports via FloTrack will provide live coverage of the 2019 Big Ten Outdoor Championships starting at 3:45 p.m. CT. BTN Plus will also carry the event with live coverage.
