While the Spartans are only two meets into the outdoor schedule, the Big Ten Championships are just over a month out as the team prepares for a busy stretch run.
"We're going to see some more kids get involved in the races this weekend," Director of track & field Walt Drenth said. "We need to see some more progress out of our hurdlers because their capacity is high. We need to see them get into the range where we think they can run fast enough to get into the first round, and that is meaningful because they will need that mentality when we get into the conference meet."
MSU is coming off its only home meet of the season, the Spartan Invitational, where several young athletes got a chance to compete and a new school-record was set along with some strong marks posted by others.
"I thought our energy was good and that we made a lot of progress," Drenth said. "We split up a lot of people and let them run 4x4's, I thought our hurdlers made a little bit of progress and Sophia (Franklin) and Jerimiah (Evans) really stood out individually. I was pleased with the way are throwers handled themselves as a group in the shot. We're seeing growth in a lot of places and that's important."
Michigan State heads into the weekend with strong marks on the track and in the field through only two weeks of competition. Senior Justine Kiprotich finished the 1,500-meters at the Raleigh Relays in 3:43.37, the third best nationally so far, while sophomore Morgan Beadlescomb ran 13:47.44 in the 5,000-meters in Raleigh, currently the fourth best time in the country.
Junior Dillon McClintock posted a time of 4:16.74 in the women's 1,500-meters, which is the fourth fastest time this year and junior Annie Fuller clocked a personal-best of 4:17.46 to open her season in the 1,500 with the eighth-best time nationally through the first few weeks of competition.
Sophomore Sophia Franklin's school-record breaking pole vault of 4.37 meters (14-4) at last week's Spartan Invitational ranks fifth in the country this season. In the men's discus throw, sophomore Jerimiah Evans has a top mark of 58.76 meters (192' 9"), sitting 10th in the nation so far.
"We're still looking to prep people for their best events and see some momentum," Drenth said. "Especially in the distances we don't run the same event over and over, so we're running around their primary events. We're trying to see, our women's 800-1,500 meter group is strong, where can we maximize our points at the conference meet. We're trying to do things in training that will allow them to be really good in May and that's our primary objective."
