Shirley shares vault title with career-high 9.875; Mitchell ties for second in all-around with season-high 39.150.
TOLEDO, Ohio – Michigan State gymnastics tallied a season-high 49.100 on vault as the Spartans finished fifth in the Friday bracket of the weekend's Elevate the Stage Big Five Meet at the Huntington Center.
Senior Roya Shirley tied for first on vault after posting a new-career high 9.875, tying for first with Penn State's Kourtney Chinnery, as Shirley earned her first victory of the season. Sophomore Lea Mitchell tied for second place in the all-around with a season-high score of 39.150.
The Spartans totaled a team score of 194.625, including 49.100 on vault, 48.875 on bars, 47.825 on beam and 48.825 on floor.
"The takeaway from tonight's B1G Five meet, and we've been pretty consistent this season demonstrating it on other occasions, is that this team is resilient and improving weekly on three events," MSU head coach Mike Rowe said. "We're still not hitting on all cylinders and we're trying to work on consistency while solidifying the beam lineup. We've got some great beam workers. Our emphasis is going to be on being more dynamic while honing in on the details each athlete needs."
Iowa won the meet with a 48.850 on vault, 49.375 on bars, 49.050 on beam and 49.175 on floor for the winning score of 196.450. No. 15 Nebraska took second place (195.900), while No. 24 Penn State was third (195.700). Maryland finished fourth with a score of 195.500.
Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State and Rutgers complete the action on Saturday, Feb. 23, and the combined results from Friday night and Saturday's action will determine the seeding for the B1G Championships on Friday, March 22 at University Park, Pa.
MSU started on bars Friday night, and the Spartans were led by freshman Sydney Ewing with a 9.825, her second-best score of the season and tying for 11th. Senior Jessica Ling tallied 9.800, while Shirley and Mitchell both posted a 9.775.
Moving to beam, Mitchell was the top Spartan with a score of 9.775, good for eighth. Sophomore Madison McHale recorded her second-best score of the season with a 9.725.
The Spartans were on floor for the third rotation, led by junior Gabriella Douglas with a 9.825, placing tied for sixth. Mitchell tallied a 9.800, tying for 11th. Ewing was next with a 9.775, followed by a 9.725 from senior Drew Hendershot.
Finishing on vault, Shirley led MSU with her event-winning score of 9.875, while freshman Ashley Hofelich and Douglas both tallied 9.825. Mitchell garnered a 9.800 as Ewing and sophomore Ashley Beatty both received a 9.775 to make up the Spartans season-high score.
"It was so gratifying to see our vault squad finish with the second-highest event score of the night," Rowe said. "They just keep improving! Roya won tonight in only her second meet this season and as our lead vaulter! The rest of the lineup followed her lead and pulled off some great vaults. We've still got a lot of growth and potential waiting to rise up and put us where we deserve to be."
The Spartans return to the road next week for a 6 p.m. in-state dual at Eastern Michigan on Friday, March 1.
