Wrestling to Honor Upcoming Graduates on Friday

EAST LANSING, Mich. --Â Michigan State will honor four upcoming graduates during the final dual meet of the season against Central Michigan on Friday, February 22. Austin Eicher, Shwan Shadaia, Anthony Tutolo, and Logan Ritchie are all set to graduate from Michigan State in May.

ABOUT THE GRADUATES
Eicher is a two-time NCAA qualifier with a 61-48 career record between Michigan State and Northern Illinois. The Fenton, Mich. native is 25-24 in dual meets coming into Friday with 13 career falls and 13 major decisions.
Shadaia has 31 wins overall for the Spartans and won 16 dual matches during his career as a Spartan wrestling at 184 and 197 pounds.
Tutolo has an 84-53 career record entering Friday's dual, with 17 of those wins coming at Michigan State and the rest coming at Kent State. A two-time NCAA qualifier, Tutolo has a 32-23 record in duals with eight falls, seven tech falls, ad nine major decisions in his career.
Ritchie has won 31 times for the Spartans through his redshirt junior season with six wins in dual matches.
SCOUTING CENTRAL MICHIGAN
Central Michigan enters Friday with a 4-7 dual meet record on the season with wins over Maryland (26-9), Northern Illinois (18-15), Southern Illinois Edwardsville (32-10), and Kent State (23-12). Michigan State went 3-1 against those opponents, with just a loss to Kent State at the South Beach Duals. Central Michigan fell to Buffalo,18-17, while Michigan State defeated the Bulls, 28-12.
The Chippewas took 11th place earlier this season at the historic Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. Matt Stencel and Logan Parks each placed at the Midlands, taking third and seventh respectively. At the tournament, Stencel pinned the most opponents in the least amount of time (four in 6:16).
At 125 pounds, Drew Hildebrandt is 0-2 against No. 7-ranked Rayvon Foley all-time which includes a 9-4 loss at the MSU Open in November. Parks is 0-1 all-time against MSU's Jake Tucker, losing a 6-4 decision at the 2018 MSU Open. Jordan Atienza and Cameron Caffey were supposed to match-up at the MSU Open, but an injury to Atienza advanced Caffey to the next round. Landon Pelham is 1-1 against Brad Wilton all-time with Wilton coming away with a 12-7 decision in tiebreakers at the 2018 MSU Open.
SPARTANS TO WATCH
• Sophomore Rayvon Foley
Foley was the Spartans lone representative at the NCAA Championships last season. In a stellar freshman campaign, Foley finished with an overall record of 28-11 which included a 13-4 record in duals and a 15-7 record in tournaments. Foley started 2018-19 strong with back-to-back tournament victories at the MSU Open and at the Navy Classic. Wins over several ranked opponents this season has Foley's stock rising up to as high as No. 7 on InterMat. Early victories over Central Michigan's Drew Hildebrandt, Ohio State's Malik Heinselman, Old Dominion's Michael McGee, and Wyoming's Cole Verner are gaining praise as all have entered the InterMat Top 20 since. Foley has earned bonus points in 22 of his 31 total bouts, including 13 of 17 in duals.
• Redshirt freshman Cameron Caffey
A redshirt for the Spartans in 2017-18, Caffey held a 22-6 record in open tournaments with first place finishes a the MSU Open, the Storm Open and the Alma Open. Caffey has continued that trend thus far in 2018-19 with tournament victories at the MSU Open, the Navy Classic and the Reno Tournament of Champions. With a 23-3 record, Caffey finds himself at No. 15 on InterMat's latest rankings. After losing three-straight bouts to fall to 18-3, Caffey went on a roll to win four straight Big Ten duals and seven straight bouts overall prior to being defeated by Purdue's Max Lyon on 2/17.
• Redshirt sophomore Drew Hughes
After wrestling to a 29-10 record as a true freshman en route to an NCAA Championships appearance, Hughes was hampered by injuries as a sophomore last season wrestling in just 12 bouts. Hughes is aiming to get back on top in is third season at MSU and has a 22-11 record to show for it thus far, placing third at the MSU Open on Nov. 3 and winning his first dual match of the season with a fall in 0:32 against Buffalo. Hughes currently sits at No. 19 on FloWrestling.
• Redshirt sophomore Jake Tucker
Tucker finished last season with a 20-18 overall record, and has matched his win total from last season at 20-13 so far in 2018-19. At the MSU Open, Tucker started the event with back-to-back victories via fall before losing to eventual champion Will Lewan. Tucker dropped two bouts at the Navy Classic, but rebounded with wins in his final two bouts to secure fourth place. Wrestling well as of late, Tucker has won five of his last seven dual matches, highlighted by a 5-3 upset over No. 11-ranked Griffin Parriott of Purdue on 2/17.

CHANDLER IN THIRD YEAR AS HEAD COACH
Michigan State head coach Roger Chandler is in his 22nd season on the Spartan wrestling staff, but his third as head coach, taking over the reins of the MSU program from longtime head coach Tom Minkel, who directed the program since 1991, and retired following his 25th season at Michigan State in 2015-16.
In his first season as head coach, Chandler led the Spartans to a 10th-place finish at Big Ten Championships, the team's best finish since 2012. MSU's 38.5 points at the meet was their highest total since 2012, showing the signs of the program's progress in Chandler's first year acting as head coach. The Spartans also qualified three for NCAA Championships for the first time since 2013 in Chandler's first year at the helm of the program.
In year two, Michigan State improved their record in dual meets to 6-11 and brought 12 freshman into the program. MSU continues to rebuild with 16 freshman on the roster in 2018-19.
The Spartans have shown marked improvement in year three with Chandler at the helm with a 9-8 dual record heading into the season dual finale against Central Michigan.
