EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Spartans swimming and diving teams were defeated by Northwestern at home on Saturday. The men fell 172-126, and the women lost 171-129.
Â
"They've got a really good team and I thought we competed very well. I thought over the two days we did a really nice job," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Aidan Farley had probably the best weekend I've ever seen by a swimmer here, maybe ever. Our team swam very well. We've got a couple weeks until our first invitational of the season so we'll see how we do there."
Â
A new pool record was set in the 200 freestyle relay by the Spartan A relay of Payton Woods, Aidan Farley, Michael Schwers and Kevin Mills, with a time of 1:20.56. The women's relay also took first (Allie Heineman, Kennedy Truex, Chloe Reed and Taylor Arnold), clocking a 1:43.19 time.
Â
"It was really cool. I didn't know that we were in contention of breaking the pool record so when I heard it over the loud speaker that was really awesome," said junior Aidan Farley. "It means we're in a good spot. We're getting ready for midseason in a few weeks and we'll be ready."
Â
Farley finished today's meet with three individual victories in the 100, 200, and 500 freestyle. He recorded times of 44.48, 1:36.58 and 4:26.74, respectively.
Â
In the 50 freestyle, seniors Woods and Heineman both claim consecutive victories. Woods, with his second straight win, touched the pad at 20.29, while Henieman, with her third straight win, finished with a time of 23.40.
Â
Freshman Sophia Balow claimed another victory for the Spartans in the 1000 freestyle, clocking a time of 10:08.67.
Â
Heineman picked up her second win of the night in the 100 freestyle, with a 51.14 time.
Â
Two Spartans placed in the top three for the men's 100 butterfly. With a time of 48.29, senior Michael Schwers took first, and freshman Brad Sanford finished second (50.07).
Â
On the diving side, junior Amanda Ling claimed first place in the 1-meter (300.67), and in the 3-meter (335.17). In the men's 1-meter, sophomore Jakob Heberling took second (310.05).
Â
Both teams hit the road as they travel to Ohio to take on Kenyon College. The meet will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9, beginning at 2 p.m.
