Five Spartans In Wave I at 2020 Olympic Trials

East Lansing, Mich. -- Five Michigan State swimmers are competing in Wave I of the US Olympic Trials, being held June 4-7 in Omaha, Nebraska.Â

All five Spartans are participating in "Wildcard Weekend", from June 4-7, with the members of the Olympic team named during Wave II competition from June 13-20.Â

Jonathan Lee (200 breast), Scott Piper (200 individual medley), Michael Schwers (100 butterfly) Erin Szara (100 breast), and Payton Woods (50 freestyle) are Michigan State's five competitors. Schwers, Woods, and Piper all completed their eligibility at Michigan State in 2020, while both Szara and Lee competed for the Spartans in 2020-21. Â

Spartan competition begins on Saturday with 2021 graduate Szara, when the heats of the 100 breast begin at 11:15 am ET. Â The consolation and championship swims of the event will be held later that evening, at 8:25 and 8:30 pm.

Sunday also has just one MSU swimmer facing competition, as 2020 senior Michael Schwers lines up in the 100 butterfly in the morning heats at 11:50 am ET. Night swims are at 8:45 (consolation) and 8:50 pm (championship).

Monday is a busy day in the MSU contingent, with three Spartans taking the blocks. The morning begins earliest for 2020 MSU grad Scott Piper, who races in the 200 IM at 11:15 am. Classmate Payton Woods follows in the 50 free heats which begin at 11:50, and 2021 junior Jonathan Lee wraps up the morning session for MSU in an 12:10 pm start in the heats of the 200 breast.   Consolation and championship races begin at 8 pm (200 IM), 8:36 pm (50 free), and 8:58 pm (200 breast).Â

Daily finals coverage of both Wave I and Wave II will air across NBC channels. Along with the live finals coverage, 24 hours of preliminaries will be streamed on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. Wave I prelims will also be live streamed on www.usaswimming.org/watch.
