Four Spartans to Compete at ITA All-American Championships, Wildcat Invite This Weekend

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis will take to the road at two different tournaments for the second weekend of its fall campaign.
Two Spartans will compete at the Wildcat Invite in Evanston, Illinois from Friday, Oct. 4 to Sunday, Oct. 6. Junior Caroline Szabo and freshman Tia Mukherjee will compete at Northwestern this weekend for the Spartans.
The last time Michigan State was at Northwestern, it resulted in a 4-3 upset victory for the Spartans over the No. 25-ranked Wildcats.
Mukherjee competed at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic last month, while this will be Szabo's first appearance this fall.
The team's competing at the Wildcat Invite are: Northwestern, Miami (OH), James Madison, Purdue, Penn State, Princeton, Columbia, Kentucky, UIC, Lewis, Chicago State, Eastern Illinois and Marquette.
Mukherjee will take on Christine Gouws of Eastern Illinois, while Szabo will face Michelle Los Arcos of James Madison to begin play on Friday.
Senior Samantha Memije and sophomore Lauren Lemonds will represent the Spartans at the 2019 ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Last season, Memije played a majority of matches at No. 1 singles, while Lemonds played consistently at No. 2 singles.
Lemonds had a 7-0 record at second singles last season, with her notable win coming as an upset victory over No. 37 Clarissa Hand of Northwestern.
Memije and Lemonds will compete in the pre-qualifying round of singles from Oct. 5-6. The duo will be looking to advance to the qualifying round, which will take place on Oct. 7-8. The main draw takes place from Oct. 9-13.
UP NEXT: Michigan State will host the ITA Midwest Regional Championships from Wednesday, Oct. 16 to Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
