MSU Soccer Completes Non-Conference Slate With Loss at Oakland

Early second-half goal sinks Spartans.
ROCHESTER, Mich. - Under cool and windy conditions, the Michigan State men's soccer team completed non-conference action with a 1-0 loss at Oakland on Tuesday.
With the defeat, Michigan State falls to 3-8-3 overall, while Oakland improves to 7-6-2 overall.
Making his first start of the season, freshman midfielder Dante Morrissette had the Spartans' first shot of the game in the ninth minute. Keeping up with his strong play against Ohio State, freshman forward Conner George's blast in the 20th minute was saved by Oakland goalkeeper Liam McQueenie.
"It was a to little to late after the goal. You can't give Oakland a goal 45 seconds into the second half on a re-start. There was a lack of organization and a wide open guy in the box. So what allows them to do is press and counter and that makes it difficult for us to break them down. They were very spirited tonight, and you have to give them credit," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said.Â
Less than a minute into the second half, the Grizzles took the lead with a well-placed goal by Luke Morrell. The goal to the lower right corner came off of passes from Evan Sawula and Elliott Bentley.
Michigan State's sense of urgency increased after the goal and the Spartans out-shot the Grizzlies 8-4 in the second half. Sophomore forward Farai Mutatu and sophomore defender Karo Azuli both had chances on the offensive end in the 72 and 73rd minutes, respectively.
In the 84th minute, the Spartans came on strong with blocked shots by Morrissette and redshirt-freshman defender Colton Stanley.Â
"I would like to have seen us win games back-to-back. The more disappointing thing was that we played so well on Saturday night against Ohio State. We will turn our full attention to Northwestern, which is of course a massive game for us," Rensing added.
In the mid-week battle, 16 Spartans got into the game. Senior midfielder Michael Pimlott and Mutatu came off the bench for the first time this season.
The Spartans now return to Big Ten play to take on Northwestern on Friday, Sept. 25 at 8:30 p.m. (ET) in Evanston. Michigan State has three league contests left against Northwestern, at Michigan (Oct. 29) and Indiana (Nov. 3) on senior night. The Spartans currently stand 3-1-1 in the Big Ten which is good for third place.
