INDEPENDENCE, Minnesota -- The Michigan State men's golf team took eighth place at the season-opening Gopher Invitational at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minnesota. The Spartans shot an 8-over-par 292 in Monday's final round at the par-71, 7,368 yard course and finished the tournament 16-over-par 868 (288-288-292), four shots out of the top five.

Oklahoma, which ended last season ranked No. 2, won the tournament at 6-under-par 847 (284-285-278). Texas (2-under-par 850) and Iowa (1-under-par 851) completed the top three in the field that included seven teams that took part in last year's NCAA Tournament.
"This team has a ton of ability, but we need to grow up, mature and have more discipline," head coach Casey Lubahn said. "Our par 5 scoring is an issue we have to address and we just can't make the mistakes we made today with a field that is this good."
Three Spartans finished the tournament in the top 20, led by senior Donnie Trosper who tied for sixth place at 2-under-par 211 (71-70-70). James Piot, who tied Trosper for the lowest round by a Spartan on Monday at 1-under-par 70, tied for 11th place at 1-over-par 214 (72-72-70).
Trosper was even through nine holes on Monday and recorded eight consecutive pars on the back before birdying No. 18 to card his second straight 70.
"Donnie was great all week and I think he felt like he left a lot out there," Lubahn said. "He played solid and was in control and that's what we expect – he's a very good player."
Rookie Troy Taylor II, who fired the lowest round of the tournament by a Spartan yesterday at 2-under-par 69, finished tied for 18th place at 3-over-par 216 (70-67-77) in his first collegiate tournament. Taylor shot a 6-over-par 77 in Monday's final round.
"He may have had a big number today, but he was really, really good yesterday and has a bright future," Lubahn said.
Andrew Walker finished the tournament at 14-over-par 227 (75-77-75), while Kaleb Johnson was 27-over-par 240 (80-83-77).
Blaine Hale of Oklahoma and Will Buhl of Arkansas tied for medalist honors at 7-under-par 206.
Michigan State will be back in action Sept. 23-24 at The Windon in Lake Forest, Illinois.
