AMES, Iowa- Michigan State gymnastics registered a 191.775, finishing third in a quad meet competing against No. 19 Minnesota, No. 25 Iowa State and UW Stout Friday night at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
AMES, Iowa- Michigan State gymnastics registered a 191.775, finishing third in a quad meet competing against No. 19 Minnesota, No. 25 Iowa State and UW Stout Friday night at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
Host No. 25 Iowa State finished first with a score of 195.775,while No. 19 Minnesota placed second recording a 194.425. UW Stout finished fourth with a score of 185.550.
The Spartans started out the meet on beam earning a team score of 48.275. Senior Hailee Westney led the way for the Green and White, tallying a 9.825 and tying for fourth on the event. Freshman Lea Mitchell recorded a 9.750 (tied for seventh) while classmate Michelina Lupinetti tallied a 9.625 (13th) rounding out the top three finishers for the Spartans.
MSU followed up beam by heading to floor, posting a 47.200 anchored by Mitchell's 9.800, marking the fifth time this season the freshman has earned a 9.800 or better on floor and tying for fifth place. Junior Brittini Chappell was right behind Mitchell in seventh place with a 9.775 while junior Drew Hendershot finished tied for eighth, recording a 9.750 for the Spartans.
The Spartans earned a score of 47.750 on vault, led once again by Mitchell's score of 9.775, tying for sixth place. Lupinetti tallied a 9.750 on vault (tied for ninth), the fifth-straight meet the freshman has scored a 9.750 or better on the event.
MSU saved its best event for last, collecting a 48.550 on bars for its highest score of the night. Westney earned a 9.875 on the apparatus, tying for third place and bringing home the highest finish of the night for the Spartans. Mitchell earned a 9.775 on bars (tied for sixth) while freshman Anne Maxim grabbed a 9.750 (tied for eighth), rounding out the top three for the Green and White.
Mitchell was the lone competitor in the all-around for the Spartans, recording a 39.100 and earning a fourth-place finish.
The Spartansremain on the road for their final regular-season meets,headingto Chicago next weekend to face UIC in a 3 p.m.ETmeet on Sunday, March 4, before traveling to Corvallis, Ore., to take on Oregon State on Saturday, March 10 at 5:30 p.m. ET. MSU then hosts the Big Five Meet on Saturday, March 17 at 2 p.m. at Jenison Field House.
