Five in Double Figures Help MSU Women Breeze Past Bowling Green

Allen and McCutcheon add career highs in the season opener.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Five Spartans scored in double figures as the Michigan State women's basketball team stormed past Bowling Green, 99-69, in the season opener at the Breslin Center. Michigan State has now won the season opener five times and the home opener nine-straight years.
The Spartans were led by a double-double from senior center Jenna Allen, who scored a team-high 17 points to go along with a career-high 15 rebounds. Junior guard Taryn McCutcheon also had a double-double with 16 points and 12 assists, which tied a career-high. Freshman guard Nia Clouden (14), sophomore forward Sidney Cooks (13) and redshirt-junior guard Shay Colley (11) also scored in double figures.
Bowling Green head coach and Okemos native Robyn Fralick was making her season debut for the Falcons. BGSU was led by a game-high 19 points from Andrea Cecil.
Michigan State opened the season with a 10-0 and eventually opened up a 12-5 lead over Bowling Green. The Falcons settled down, cutting the Spartan lead to 12-4 with four minutes left in the first quarter. McCutcheon lead all scorers with eight first-quarter points as MSU jumped out to a 20-15 lead at the first break.
The home team was able to capitalize on 19 Falcon turnovers, scoring 20 points off of turnovers. The Spartans also scored 33 bench points, compared to 14 by BGSU.
The Spartans used an almost four-minute Falcon scoring drought to open up a 32-18 lead with 5:20 left in the second quarter, leading to a BGSU timeout. Michigan State's 8-0 run came to an end after a BGSU basket by Molly Dever with under five left in the quarter.
MSU came out hot in the second half. The Spartans used a 14-2 run over 2:48 seconds to jump out to a 60-31 lead mid-way through the third quarter. In the third quarter alone, MSU scored 29 points. Allen scored 13 of her 17 points in the third stanza.
The Falcons did not go down without a fight, starting the fourth period with a 12-0 run, trimming the lead to 70-58. Michigan State was able to bounce back with a 7-0 scoring run of their own to reclaim a 20-point advantage. Colley and Cooks came to life in the fourth quarter, scoring six and seven points, respectively.
The Spartans continue their three-game homestand to open the season, hosting East Tennessee State on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. The game is the first half of a doubleheader with the MSU men's team.
Postgame Notes vs. Bowling Green
• Freshmen Nia Clouden and Tory Ozment both made the collegiate debuts for the Spartans. Clouden scored 14 points in her collegiate debut, while Ozment added two rebounds and an assist.
• Senior forward Jenna Allen earned her first double-double of the season and the third of her career with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Her previous career-high in rebounds was was 11 against Western Michigan on Dec. 3, 2017.
• Of the five season-opening victories in a row, the Spartans have out-scored the opposition by an average of 30.8 points per game, overall an 83.2-52.4 scoring average, including the last four by 30+ points . . . the 99 points was the second-most by MSU in that five-game win streak behind 100 points in last season's 100-58 win over Robert Morris . . . it is also the Spartans' third-highest scoring output in a season-opener under head coach Suzy Merchant behind 116 in a 116-50 win over Niagara in the 2008-09 season-opener . . . MSU is now 9-4 in season-openers under Merchant.
