Tar Heel Invitational Up Next For No. 25 Spartans

EAST LANSING -- The 25th-ranked Michigan State women's golf team returns to action this weekend (Oct. 12-14) at the 43rd annual Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It will be the Spartans first tournament of the month and second to last on the fall schedule.

The teams will play 18 holes on Friday through Sunday, with fixed tee times on No. 1 and No. 10 starting at 11 a.m. on Friday; 8:50 a.m. on Saturday; and a 9:15 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday.

The Course
The par-72, 6,379-yard UNC Finley Golf Course is again the host course for the Tar Heel Invitational. Originally designed by George Cobb, the course opened in 1949. Three holes were added in the early 1980s and in 1999, internationally-renowned golf course designer Tom Fazio designed the new UNC Finley Golf Course.

The Lineup
Michigan State's lineup will include Yurika Tanida, Allyson Geer-Park, Paz Marfa Sans, Valery Plata and Haylin Harris. All five players were also in the lineup for the first two events this season.

The talented 18-team field includes 12 teams ranked in the Golfweek top 50, six of which are in the top 15: Arkansas (9), Charlotte, Clemson (30), Duke (10), Furman (13), Louisville (37), Michigan, Michigan State (25), NC State, North Carolina (41), Ohio State (38), Rollins, South Carolina (34), Tulane, UNCW, Vanderbilt (2), Virginia (7) and Wake Forest (11).

Spartans at the Tar Heel Invitational
Michigan State has a strong history at the Tar Heel Invitational as the Spartans are making their 10th consecutive appearance in the tournament. The Spartans won the event in 2009 and Sarah Burnham finished as the runner-up in 2015. Last season, Paz Marfa Sans set a tournament record with an 8-under-par 64 in the second round.

The Last Time Out: Mason Rudolph Championship (Sept. 21-22)
In a tournament that was shortened to 36 holes due to poor weather, the Spartans place 11th at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tennessee. Yurika Tanida had the best finish of her career as she placed ninth at 2-under-par 142. Her second-round 70 was the lowest score of her collegiate career.

The Spartans will close their fall schedule with another familiar tournament – The Landfall Tradition – in Wilmington, North Carolina, Oct. 26-28.
