EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State's swimming & diving teams will split Friday, Oct. 12. The men compete at Illinois-Chicago at 4 p.m., and the women will compete at Illinois at 5 p.m.
With one meet completed, the men's team is looking to capture their first win of the year. In their season opener against Iowa, sophomore Aidan Farley claimed first place for the Spartans in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.77.
For the women, sophomore diver Amanda Ling scored a 268.87 in the 1-meter and a 292.8 in the 3-meter dives against Iowa. Her scores earned her an appearance at the 2019 regional championship.
UIC, who was predicted to finish fifth in the Horizon League preseason poll, will host the Spartans for their first meet of the 2018-19 season. Last year, the Flames finished with a 5-5 overall record.
"The head coach there, Tim Loeffler, he's my old assistant coach. I'm looking forward to seeing him and they have a really nice facility. Our guys will be challenged because they'll be excited to host a Big Ten team. I'm sure they'll be up and ready to go and Tim's a great coach too," said head coach Matt Gianiodis.
The Illini women have won the last nine out of ten meetings against the Spartans and finished 12th overall at the 2017-18 Big Ten championship.
"This is our annual trip to Champaign and I've known Sue for a long time. We've had a really good series of meets over the last five or six years, they've been pretty tight," Gianiodis said. "We're looking forward to hopefully improving off of what we did a couple weeks ago when we swam against Iowa."
Results will be available at msuspartans.com following the conclusion of the meets.
