"I have to be proud of this team's performance today. We came out and really just got the job done; did what we had to do. We played on our terms, aggressive tennis," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "Do I think we have another layer in us? I do. But I think it's a great start to our season against two pretty good teams. A lot of credit to these girls and the hard work that they've done in the offseason until now."
MSU started off the day by winning the doubles point vs. Xavier, as senior Habiba Shaker and freshman Ava Thielman, along with senior Lexi Baylis and sophomore Samantha Memije both won their doubles matches. Shaker and Thielman won, 6-3, while Baylis and Memije, 6-1.
The Spartans' momentum carried over to singles play as junior Davina Nguyen, Baylis and Memije each had dominating victories in straight sets to close out the match with Xavier. At No.4 singles, Nguyen defeated Elizabeth Bagerbaseh, 6-3, 6-0. Baylis also stopped Lauren Fitz-Randolph, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. The match was clinched at No. 5 singles when Memije shut down Rachael Reichenbach, 6-4, 6-3.
Michigan State once again secured the doubles point with Memije and Chua winning 6-0. Baylis and Thielman clinched the point for MSU, picking up a 6-1 win against Grand Canyon.
To close out the day, the Spartans continued on with another sweep in the singles, with all six Spartans winning in straight sets. At No. 4 singles, Nguyen shut down Celina Buhr, 6-0, 6-2. The match was clinched at No. 3 singles when junior Emily Metcalf stopped Valentina Mokrova, 6-0, 6-2. Not a single Spartan dropped a set in the match.

"We've put in the hard work at practice and now it's about competing, and I think the girls have worked hard to be physically ready for this.
