Rowers Open Big Ten Season at Rutgers

The Spartan rowing program has a pair of destinations this weekend, as half the team will head to New Jersey and the novices will race down the road at Belleville Lake in Ann Arbor.
The Spartans, who are ranked 20th in the initial Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) national poll, will bring their NCAA boats â€" the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four â€" to New Jersey. On Friday afternoon, the Spartans will take on Big Ten foe Rutgers on the Raritan River. Racing starts with the second varsity eight at 5:30 pm, and the varsity eights will line up at 5:50. The varsity fours will race in a series of set pieces for which published results will not be available.
On Saturday, the racing will feature a pair of top-10 crews in addition to the Spartans, as No. 5 Brown also travels to Princeton, NJ to race the No. 10 Tigers on Lake Carnegie. At 9:20, the varsity fours will race, followed by the second eight at 9:40 and the marquee race will go off at 10 am featuring the three top-20 crews.
The Spartans opened at the Cardinal Invitational last weekend in Oak Ridge, Tenn., with the varsity eight and second varsity eight both winning their Saturday afternoon heats and falling only to No. 6 Virginia in the morning session. On Sunday, MSU was behind the Cavaliers and No. 4 Michigan in the final session.
MSU's novices had a strong start in Oak Ridge, and will be challenged by the novice entries from Michigan and Ohio State this weekend, as well as a pair of Ivy League crews. Michigan is hosting Yale and Radcliffe/Harvard this weekend on Belleville Lake, but the Spartans will only have entries in the novice eight races this weekend â€" on Saturday morning, the second novice eight is scheduled for a 9 am start (against UM and OSU), followed by the novice eights at 9:24 against the host Wolverines and Radcliffe. In the afternoon session, MSU's second novice eight goes at 1 pm against its two Big Ten foes, and a second varsity four entry will race Ohio State and Yale at 2 pm.
