EAST LANSING - The Michigan State women's golf team took fourth place in the 33rd annual Mary Fossum Invitational with a 41-over-par 905 (301-302-302). COMPLETE RESULTS
Junior Sarah Burnham, who entered Sunday's final round in a tie for first place, finished as second - one shot behind Dewi Weber of Miami. Weber shot a 2-under-par 70 on Sunday, finishing the tournament 4-under. Burnham was even through 14 before picking up her first birdie on hole 15. She bogied 18, finishing the day with an even-par 72.
Burnham's 213 (71-70-72) was the lowest score ever recorded by a Spartan golfer in the Fossum Invitational - one shot better than Laura Kueny's 214 in 2007.
"Breaking the Michigan State record for the tournament with a 213 is another accomplishment for Sarah," MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. "She played solid all weekend. Today, she was frustrated that she hit a lot of great iron shots, but didn't' get as many puts to drop. She was right in it until the last moment."
After withdrawing from yesterday's second round, junior Katie Sharp bounced back on Sunday with a 2-over-par 74. Sharp led all Spartans with three birdies on Sunday.
Sophomore Carolyn Markley finished in 15th place with an 11-over-par 227 (73-76-78). Sybil Robinson (76-79-78--233) and Paz Marfa Sans (81-77-80--238) rounded out the Spartans' top five.
Individually for MSU, junior Jacqueline Setas tied for 11th place. After a 74 and 73, respectively, on Saturday, Setas shot a 76 on Sunday to finish the tournament 7-over-par (223).
Freshman Catherine McEvoy placed 16th, with a 12-over-par 228 (74-74-80). Greer Clausen (78-77-80) Logan Otter (79-79-82) and Caroline Harding (81-81-84) also competed for the Spartans.
"It was great to have so many former players out here this weekend to see the tournament," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "This tournament means a lot to the program and it was great to have so many Spartans here. It was also cool for Laura Kueny to be here to see Sarah break her tournament record."
The Spartans will be off the next two weekends and will return to action Oct. 14-16 at the Tar Heel Invitational, hosted by the University of North Carolina.
