MADISON, Wis. — The Spartans (10-13, 0-6) were bested, 7-0, by the No. 44 Badgers (14-3, 4-2) in Big Ten play on Friday night in Madison.
The Spartans were unable to upend the hosts in doubles action, with Jasper Koenen and Billy Shisler falling, 6-3, at No. 2 and Mac Roy and Michael Dube losing 6-1 at the No. 1 spot.
"It really just comes down to us not getting the starts we need to get," MSU head coach Gene Orlando said. "We have to start our matches better so we don't have to play from behind. We just need to come out with more energy and give ourselves a chance to win."
In singles play the Spartans were swept by the No. 44 Badgers, but put up a fight, with Roy forcing a third set at No. 1 singles and Ivan Rakic falling in a 10-point third-set tiebreaker at No. 6. Koenen battled at No. 3, but lost a tiebreaker in the second set. The Badgers clinched the match with wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5.
"We knew this was going to be a tough season and we're working through it," Orlando said. "We're finding ways to get better in every match and even though the result isn't what we wanted tonight, we'll be ready to come out and play on Sunday."
The Spartans return to action at Minnesota on Sunday to close out another weekend of Big Ten play.
