There's never an easy way to say goodbye to something that has defined you for a lifetime, but there is an easy way to describe our only senior for the 2015-16 tennis season. Emily Meyers, a phenomenal leader, contributor and all around memorable aspect for the women's tennis team, has reached her final moments, not only competing for Michigan State University, but also playing tennis at such a competitively high level. As she prepared for her final time competing for glory in her territory, Meyers has had a tough time facing that the rollercoaster ride is almost finished.
"It was a really bittersweet feeling playing my last dual match ever as a Spartan," Meyers said. "I'm very excited and grateful that I got to play the last match on our home courts. Lately it's been hitting me hard that it's the last time I'll get to compete alongside my teammates."
Walking on campus for the first time four years ago, Meyers had no idea what to expect. As it is scary enough acclimating to the transition between high school and college, it would be even more nerve-wracking to enter a new team of people as the only freshman. From the beginning to the end, there have been countless memories, small and big, that have stayed with Emily throughout her time here as a student-athlete.
"My favorite memory on the court this year was winning my match against Michigan," Meyers said. "As a Spartan, you watch other teams such as football and basketball win huge games against the Wolverines, and when you see the looks on their faces it becomes a dream for you to get that one special win. I never thought my senior year it would finally be me. All of my teammates were fighting alongside me for it too, which made victory that much sweeter."
There's no doubt that we will be losing a valuable member to our team as Meyers moves on to the next chapter of her life. In Emily's time here, she has compiled enough wins to tie the record for the most singles wins in Michigan State Women's Tennis history (73). Additionally, she has individually beaten every Big Ten team through her four years competing in the Green and White. Having done a significant amount for our program, Meyers will use everything she has learned from athletics and walk off campus as a proud tennis alumnus.
"I'll definitely miss competing alongside my teammates the most," Meyers said. "Tennis is an individual sport until you get to college, and once you join a team the sport becomes a lot more selfless. One of the greatest feelings is fighting for something greater than yourself, and I will miss that feeling a lot."
On behalf of the Michigan State Women's team, coaches and staff members, we want to wish Emily the best of luck in her future endeavors. From her monster bruises to her monster shots, she will be greatly missed as a teammate, friend and all around leader.
"I'm so grateful for everything this journey has brought me," Meyers said. "I'm proud to be forever a Spartan."
