Spartans lose to Minnesota, 4-0

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Michigan State men's tennis team (10-14, 0-7) fell to Minnesota (7-14, 1-6), 4-0, at the Baseline Tennis Center on Sunday.
In their first full outdoor match of the season, the Spartans got off to a slow start in doubles play, with the Gophers taking No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to carry a 1-0 lead into singles competition.
"It's definitely an adjustment to go from playing outside to playing inside," MSU head coach Gene Orlando said. "They made the adjustment better than us. We've just got to make more shots."
The Gophers carried their momentum into singles action, with quick wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles to go up, 3-0, overall. After losing his opening set, Ivan Rakic mounted a comeback in his second set, but lost a 7-5 tiebreaker, giving the Gophers the match.
Jasper Koenen took his first set, but he, along with Michael Dube and Alexander Kim, all had their matches go unfinished after the Gophers clinched the 4-0 win.
"We did a good job and had some positives, it just wasn't good enough," Orlando said. "We have to be better next week, and we will be. This week coming up is all about regrouping and preparing for another tough weekend of Big Ten tennis."
The Spartans stay on the road for two matches next weekend, taking on Illinois on Friday and Northwestern on Sunday.
