EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshman Davina Nguyen battled through a three-set thriller to clinch victory for No. 69 Michigan State, 4-3, over Xavier on Sunday, Feb. 14, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
"Credit to Xavier, they were extremely tough and played very well," said head coach Simone Jardim. "They came out of the gates strong, but we played a little hesitant. This was a wakeup call after losing the doubles point. This showed what we are made of because we fought extremely hard. That is why we won this match. This is a culture change for us, and it is good to be on this end."
Just as senior Emily Meyers knotted the team score at 3-3 with a three-set victory against the Musketeers' (5-3) Sophia Abelson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, Nguyen and Cristina Di Lorenzo stood at 4-4 in the deciding frame on court two. Di Lorenzo claimed the opening set, but the Utica, Michigan, native bounced back with a 6-2 second set. The emotional match became a fight of attrition as the two went back-and-forth to a 5-5 score. Nguyen went on to break her foe's serve and clinch the match on hers, 7-5.
"Emily has been somebody who has been a good leader," Jardim said. "She has done her thing and has been a part of our transition over the last couple of years. Having someone like her who is on the same page as us is important.
"Davina is very capable. There is no doubt in that. This moment showed what she is made of and what she can do. She has been competitive with the top players in the country, and I hope today helps her realize she is very good and can compete with anybody."
Sophomore Aslina Chua won her fourth dual match of the spring, ninth of the year, in a convincing two sets, 6-3 6-3. Freshman Emily Metcalf won her second match of the weekend, downing Xavier's Lauren Ghidotti, 7-5, 6-4.
The Spartans (4-2) had to battle from behind after dropping the doubles point. Sunday's victory was the first win of the spring that MSU lost the doubles point.
Michigan State is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 21, at No. 22 Kentucky (4-1) in Lexington, Kentucky, at 11 a.m.
