
Spartans Pack Up For Final Road Trip

EAST LANSING, Mich. - There is one more game left in the regular season and the Michigan State women's soccer team is looking to send their seniors off on a positive note. Momentum is in the Spartans favor as they are coming off a huge upset win over No. 16 Penn State.
The last time out Michigan State wasted no time in showing their dominance against the Nittany Lions, notching back-to-back goals to go in to the halftime break with the 2-0 lead. Penn State notched their lone goal in the second half, but the Spartans quickly replied with a final goal to give PSU their first loss in the Big Ten conference.
Junior Jamie Cheslik garnered two honors on Tuesday, Oct. 25 for her standout performance against Penn State. The Northville, Michigan native was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week, which was announced Tuesday, October 25, and she was also named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office, Tuesday, October 25. This was her second Big Ten Player of the Week honor, her last coming on October 6, 2014 when she was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. She tallied the final two goals against the Nittany Lions, including the decisive game-winning goal with 33 seconds left.
Michigan State has amassed an overall record of 6-10-1 this season, 3-7 in Big Ten action, and is looking to add one final victory under their belts on Wednesday, Oct. 26 against Purdue. MSU holds an all-time series record of 12-8-1 against Purdue. The Spartans will take to the road for their final game at Folk Field in West Lafayette, Ind., and the kick is set to begin at 7 p.m. under the lights.
Purdue is 12th right now in the Big Ten standings, after holding a 4-11-1 season record, and a 2-7-1 record in the conference. The Boilermakers are coming off of a 2-2 draw with Indiana on Saturday, October 22.
Indiana netted the first goal, then Purdue responded with two goals from Andrea Petrina and Maddy Duncan, but Indiana had a late second half goal to bring regulation play to a 2-2 tie. The teams played in to the two overtimes, but ultimately concluded in the tie.
Prior to Saturday's game against Indiana, Purdue was on a five-game losing streak. The last victory for the Boilermakers came against Illinois on the road on September 15, where they defeated the Fighting Illini 2-0.
Andrea Petrina is leading the Boilermaker squad in goals, assists, and points. She has gathered three goals and four assists for a total of 10 points this 2016 season. Hannah Leinert is close behind with two goals and three assists for a total of seven points.
Jordan Ginther has spent the majority of the time in the net for the Boilermakers logging 975:05 minutes this season, and holds a record of 2-8-1. She has allowed 21 goals for goals against average of 1.94. She has stopped 50 shots to make her third in the Big Ten in saves per game.
