COLUMBUS, Ohio - Seniors Elizabeth Brown and Ian Rodriguez headlined Michigan State's swimming and diving efforts at Ohio on Friday night as the two programs competed in an unscored, long course meet. Brown won the women's 100 butterfly, as Rodriguez took home first-place honors in the 100 back.
"We swam really well tonight, better than we expected coming in," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Ohio State swam very well also, so you have to give them credit. Lizzie (Brown) was definitely the headliner, winning the 100 fly, as well as Ian (Rodriguez) winning the 100 backstroke. I thought they swam really well. We had a lot of kids do well though, and we are excited for tomorrow morning."
Brown's victory in the 100 fly came by more than three tenths of a second, tapping the wall in 1:02.43. Her meet started with a second-place finish in the 200 fly, recording a 2:17.51. Brown's performances accounted for the top finishes on the women's side for the Spartans.
Freshman Ana Sortland swam her way to a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, stopping the clock at 1:15.37. Senior Marina Borri was short behind, taking fourth in 1:15.58.
On the men's side, Rodriguez turned in a similar day as Brown, claiming one race and earning second in another. He opened with his victory in the 100 back, tapping the wall in 57.62. Rodriguez closed his meet with a 2:08.97 in the 200 individual medley for second.
Junior Alec Kandt turned in a runner-up effort in the 200 breaststroke, clocking a 2:24.59. Sophomores Mitch Strahlman and Alex Duffy both recorded third-place performances. Strahlman was third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:38.27, as Duffy's 2:07.05 was good for third in the 200 fly. Sophomore Joe Szczupakiewicz took third in the 400 free with a 4:06.72.
