Spartan Swimming & Diving Falls in Columbus

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior Elizabeth Brown led the women's team with a pair of victories, as Junior Alec Kandt and sophomore Joe Szczupawiewicz paced the men in the Spartans' road loss at Ohio State on Saturday in Columbus. The women fell, 182-104, and the men were edged out by the Buckeyes, 186-101.
"We had some pretty good swims," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "I thought that we performed better last night, which may have taken a little bit out of us, more than we thought. Joe Szczupawiewicz and Claire Pilarski both had some good swims I thought."
Brown followed her strong performance on Friday night with a third-place finish in the 200 fly, tapping the wall in 2:05.78. Brown claimed two more events later in the meet, clocking a 58.12 in the 100 fly and a 2:08.04 in the 200 IM.
Sophomore Racheal Bukowski earned second-place honors with a time of 23.66 in the 50 free. Senior Marina Borri also found herself in runner-up position, finishing with a 2:22.16 in the 200 breaststroke.
Junior Claire Pilarski was sixth in the 200 back with a time of 2:11.40, finishing just behind teammate sophomore Madison Nowak, who took fifth with a 2:09.52.
On the boards, freshmen Julia Oppedisano and Morgan Wellenzohn paced the Spartans on the 1 meter and 3 meter, respectively. Oppedisano was second with a score of 269.25, as Wellenzohn took third on the 3-meter board with an effort of 270.53.
Kandt was a standout on the men's side, taking second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.90. He followed the performance with a 2:06.21 in the 200 breaststroke, once again finishing in second place.
Szczupawiewicz battled to a second-place effort in the 500 free with a 4:37.69. Earlier in the meet, he placed fourth in the 1,000 free, tapping the wall in 9:31.32. Sophomore Nick Leshok tallied a pair of third-place efforts, swimming to a 21.12 in the 50 free and 46.50 in the 100 free.
"We will build on this week and come into senior day next week ready to compete," Gianiodis said. "Hopefully the team rallies around our seven senior in their final home meet at Michigan State and perform well."
MSU returns to the Charles McCaffree Pool on Saturday, Jan. 23, to host Oakland on senior day. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
