Spartans Stopped by Nittany Lions on Friday

EAST LANSING, Mich. â€" Michigan State field hockey was overcome by Penn State, 6-1, in Friday's matchup at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex in State College, Pa. The Spartans move to 3-6 overall, 0-2 in the Big Ten with the loss.
The Nittany Lions struck first as Mary Nell Smith found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead over the Spartans in the 19th minute.
The Spartan deficit moved to 2-0 in the 29th minute as Stephanie Hussey connected on a pass from Gini Bramley for her third goal of the year.
The Spartans answered back as MSU senior Mallory Tyler bounced one in off of the top of the net to make it a 2-1 game in the 32nd minute. This unassisted goal marks Tyler's third goal of the season and moves her into second-place among Spartan scorers this season.
PSU's Shay Cannon converted in the 55th minute to make it a 4-1 game. The goal resulted off of a corner opportunity for the Nittany Lions. The Nittany Lions added to their lead off of a penalty stroke in the 65th minute to take a 5-1 advantage over the Spartans.
The final goal for the Nittany Lions came in the final minute of play as Bramley scored for the first time this season to make it 6-1.
The Nittany Lions went on to take a 6-1 win over the Spartans and improve to 4-4 overall, 1-1 in the Big Ten.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sierra Patton recorded 12 saves in today's contest, just one short of her career-high 13 set in 2014.
Up next, the Spartans will head to College Park, Md. to face No. 9 Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m.
