EAST LANSING, Michigan â€" Michigan State overcame Quinnipiac, 3-2, in Friday's matchup at Columbia to move to 3-2 on the season. The Spartans outshot the Bobcats 21-5 with a 13-3 edge in shots on goal.
"Getting a win on the road was huge for us," said MSU head coach Helen Knull. "It's always nice to get another one in the win column."
The first goal of the day came in the seventh minute of regulation as MSU redshirt sophomore forward Kendal Anderson found the net to put the Spartans up 1-0 with her first goal of the season. Senior Heather Howie was credited with the assist on the goal, her third of the season.
Quinnipiac's Selina Reichert scored at the 16:05 mark to tie the game 1-1. Her goal was assisted by sophomore Michelle Federico.
A 2-1 lead came for the Spartans in the 26th minute as junior Kristin Matula scored off of a scramble in front of the net. The goal was unassisted and served as her second on the year.
Junior Megan Fenton notched a goal in the 34th minute play, putting the Spartans up 3-1 heading into halftime. Fenton picked up the shot off of a rebound, firing and scoring from point-blank range.
The lone second-half goal came from Quinnipiac's Federico off of a long-pass assist from junior Angie King. The efforts fell short as the Spartans held on for a 3-2 win over the Bobcats.
The Spartans took 11 penalty corners in the matchup, alongside Quinnipiac's five. The 11 corner attempts ties a Spartan season high originally set at Central Michigan on Aug. 29.
"We had 11 corners and 13 shots on goal, so to only get three goals is a little disappointing," said Knull. "I thought Quinnipiac's backfield and goalkeeper played very well today, but we've got to do a better job finishing on the chances that we get."
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sierra Patton recorded the win, moving to 3-2 along with the Spartans. Patton recorded just one save in today's game.
The Spartans will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 13 at noon against Columbia at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue in New York.
"We're ready to get after it on Sunday against Columbia," said Knull. "It will be good to be back here and get a second game under our belts. I'm really looking for us to finish on the opportunities that we have and get a little bit more in the back of the goal."
