Sarah Burnham Wins Minnesota State Match Play Championship

EAST LANSING, Mich. â€" Rising sophomore Sarah Burnham continued her successful summer season by winning the Minnesota State Match Play Championship on Wednesday at Deer Run Golf Club in Victoria, Minnesota.
Burnham defeated former Minnesota Gopher golfer Anna Laorr in the championship match, 4 and 3. Burnham trailed by one through five holes, but birdied four of her next five holes to go up three. She also won the 14th hole and closed out the match after the 15th hole with a four-hole advantage.
The second seed out of 16 golfers, Burnham beat Megan Welch in the first round, 4 and 3, then topped Stephanie Herzog in the quarterfinals, 4 and 2. Burnham, a native of Maple Grove, Minnesota, advanced to the final after defeating Cassie Deeg in the semifinals, 2 up.
Burnham also competed in the U.S. Women's Amateur earlier this month and the U.S. Women's Open in July. She tied for third at both the Minnesota Women's State Open Championship during the first week of August and the Canadian Amateur in late July. Burnham teamed up with Kenzie Neisen to win the Minnesota State Four-Ball Championship by 11 strokes on June 25.
Burnham closed her first season in East Lansing with one of the best freshmen single-season scoring averages in program history at 76.27, which also ranked second on the team in 2014-15. She started in all 10 of MSU's tournaments and finished third on the team with 54 birdies.
