EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State (11-11, 2-3) men's tennis team fell in a tough match to No. 24 Northwestern (15-7, 4-2) on Friday, 6-1.
"It was a close match, but you have to find a way to win," head coach Gene Orlando said.
The Wildcats drew first blood, winning the doubles point. Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer topped Gijs Linders and Brett Forman at the No. 2 spot, 8-1. The No. 69 pair of Alex Pasareanu and Sam Shropshire def. No. 17 Harry Jadun and John Patrick Mullane, 8-6, to clinch the point.
"I thought we responded well after losing the doubles point," Orlando said. "We had the energy we needed to get the win."
Jadun evened the match for the Spartans, taking down Konrad Zieba in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 3 singles position. Mullane and Forman also won the first sets of their matches.
Northwestern took the rest of the singles points, but MSU made them earn every one of them.
Mullane, Forman and Roy all took their opponents to a third set, with Roy mounting a comeback after falling in the first set.
"We have another opportunity ahead of us tomorrow," Orlando said.
