LINCOLN, Neb. - The Michigan State (10-10, 1-2 Big Ten) men's tennis team was narrowly defeated by Nebraska (8-7, 1-2) on Friday, 4-3.
The Spartans and Cornhuskers fought for six hours at the Lincoln Racquet Club.
MSU struck first, taking the doubles point behind victories from Gijs Linders/Mac Roy and Doug Zade/Jasper Koenen at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively.
Brett Forman kept the Spartans rolling into the singles, where he won his match at the No. 2 position over Marc Herrmann, 7-5, 6-3.
Nebraska was able to tie things up with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 singles. At the No. 3 spot, Linus Erhart defeated Harry Jadun, 7-5, 6-4, and Dusty Boyer topped Gijs Linders, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles.
Mac Roy gave Michigan State a 3-2 lead with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Andrew Dzulynsky at No. 4 singles.
Then the Huskers took the No. 5 and No. 6 singles points, behind the efforts of Chris Hobgarski and Bradford Zitsch, respectively. Hobgarski def. Michael Dube, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5). Zitsch clinched the match with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 6 position.
Michigan State heads to Iowa City to take on the No. 54 Hawkeyes on Sunday at 12 p.m.
