
No. 44 Spartans Bounce Badgers

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 44 Michigan State women's tennis team improved to 14-2 on the year and 3-0 in the Big Ten with a 4-3 victory over Wisconsin Saturday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The victory over Wisconsin marks the first time that the Spartans have beat the Badgers in back to back matches since 1974-75.
"I am really proud of the girls," said head coach Simone Jardim. "The girls have confidence in themselves and they have confidence in each other. They know that if they put in the hard work the results will come and they are showing."
The Spartans struck first on Saturday afternoon in doubles. At No. 2 doubles the team of freshman Allie Baer and senior Catherine Parenteau downed Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau, 8-1. The Spartan duo improved to 10-3 on the year. The sophomore duo of Athena Trouillot and Erin Faulkner downed the No. 9 time in the region of Maria Avgerinos and Lauren Chypyha at No. 1 doubles, 8-4.
Freshman Aslina Chua improved to 17-9 in singles this season with a victory over Lauren Burich. Chua won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Catherine Parenteau was victorious at No. 4 singles, defeating Sydney Rider, 7-5, 6-4. Parenteau is now 9-5 on the year.
Erin Faulkner came back to win to clinch the match in dramatic fashion. After dropping the first set to No. 11 in region Lauren Chypyha 6-1, Faulkner rallied to win the next two sets, 6-2 and 7-5. Faulkner is now 17-10 singles on the year.
Michigan State returns to action on Sunday as it hosts the No. 63 Minnesota Golden Gophers at noon.
