
Spartans Sweep Saturday Doubleheader

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team improved to 9-1 on the season with two wins on Saturday. Michigan State has now its last seven matches. The Spartans defeated Bowling Green 7-0 and Toledo 6-1.
"I feel really good about today's performance," said head coach Simone Jardim. "Doubleheaders are never easy; we have been here a long time today. We keep getting the wins and that is what is important. We continue to get better every week."
The Spartans grounded the Falcons of Bowling Green, 7-0. Michigan State did not drop a set to Bowling Green on Saturday.
The Spartans started the day winning the doubles point. The team of sophomore Anna Zelechonok and freshman Aslina Chua won at No. 2 singles, 6-2. Bowling Green did not have enough players to field a team at No. 3 doubles.
Sophomore Athena Trouillot earned the victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Megan Miller, 6-2, 6-2.
At No. 2 singles, junior Emily Meyers downed Emily Witt 6-3, 6-1 to improve to 13-6 on the year.
Freshman Allie Baer defeated Leeah Floyd in straight sets at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Baer is now 5-4 in singles on the year.
At No. 4 singles, freshman Colleen O'Brien won, 6-0. Bowling Green's Antonia Farrar forfeited after the first set.
Sophomore Anna Zelechonok improved to 2-1 on the year in singles play. Zelechonok defeated Sydney Seeley at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Senior Hilary Hager won at No. 6 singles due to forfeit. Bowling Green did not have enough players.
The Spartans took the doubles point in dramatic fashion from Toledo. Emily Meyers and freshman Lexi Baylis notched the first victory at No. 3 doubles defeating Sidnay Huck and Emily Mazzola, 6-3. Allie Baer and senior Catherine Parenteau came back from match point to win at No. 2 doubles, 7-5.
Athena Trouillot notched her second singles victory of the day at No. 5 singles. Trouillot defeated Sidnay Huck, 6-0, 6-2.
Lexi Baylis won in convincing fashion at No. 2 singles. Baylis defeated Pia Rygh 6-2, 6-1. Baylis is now 21-3 on the year.
At No. 6 singles, Emily Meyers deafeated Emily Mazzola of Toledo, 6-1, 6-3.
Catherine Parenteau clinched the Spartans fourth singles victory of the night in a tiebreaker. Parenteau defeated Katelyn Nguyen, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0. Parenteau won the tiebreaker 10-3.
Freshman Aslina Chua was victorious at No. 3 singles. Chua defeated Lauren Thai, 6-3, 6-4.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday as they host DePaul at 10 a.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Courts.
